89 <br /> <br />May 2S, !98g <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth that the City Clerk be <br />instructed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the Mayors and Councils of the Tidewater <br />cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach with the <br />request that each city consider creating a similar Committee, with one Committee member from <br />each city serving on a regional panel to address these issues and become an advocacy group <br />~eF~resenting Southeastern Virginia." <br /> <br />Ayes~ Barnes, Beamer, Gray, Oast, Webb, Whitlow, Johansen <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />Mr. Gray offered the following names for the Citizens Committee: <br /> <br /> Edward L. Oast, Jr., Chairman Richard Early, Jr. <br /> All Mapp Dorothy Hill <br /> Calvin Smith <br /> Motion of Mr. Whitlow and seconded by Mr. Beamer, that nominations be closed, <br />above names, as submitted, were adopted by 6~R~l~:~Oast~staining) vote. <br /> <br />and the <br /> <br /> 82-189 "Consideration of a resolution extending the congratulations of the Council <br />of the City of Portsmouth to the Norfolk Southern Corporation for selecting the Tidewater <br />as its corporate headquarters. <br /> <br /> This resolution extends congratulations from the Portsmouth City Council to the Norfolk <br />Southern Corporation for establishing the Tidewater area as its corporate headquarters. The <br />City Mamager recommends adoption." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Beamer and sec3nded by Mr. Oast, the following resolution was adopted, <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE COUNCIL OF <br />PORTSMOUTH TO THE NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORPORATION FOR SELECTING <br />AREA AS ITS CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. <br /> <br /> THE CITY OF <br />~HE TIDEWATER <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Norfolk and Western Railway and Southern Railway have merged to become Norfolk <br />Southern Corporation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the formation of this s~ngle <br />across twenty-one states and consisting of <br />1,600 in the Tidewater area; and <br /> <br />rail system will <br />31,OOO miles of <br /> <br />create a rail network extending <br />track with 4,260 employees includi~ <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this merger~ will facilitate improved rail service thereby increasing freight <br />traffic and better opportunities and benefits for shippers and the public at large; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the location of the corporate headquarters of the Norfolk Southern Corporation <br />the City of Norfolk will inspire economic growth there and in other Tidewater cities <br />Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Portsmouth would like to <br />extend its congratulations to Norfolk Southern Corporation for selecting the Tidewater area as <br />the location for its corporate headquarters and wishes it much success in this endeavor. <br /> <br /> BE IT F~RTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she hereby is, directed to forward <br />copies of this resolution to the appropriate offizials of the Norfolk Southern Corporation." <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Beamer, Gray, Oast, Webb, Whitlow, Johansen <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 82-190 "Considetion of a resolution congratulating the City of Norfolk for attracting <br />Norfolk Southern Corporation to the City of Norfolk and the Tidewater area. <br /> <br /> This resolution extends congratulations from the Portsmouth City <br />of Norfolk for attracting Norfolk Southern Corporation to the City of <br />water area. The City Manager recommends adoption." <br /> <br />Council to the City <br />Norfolk and the Tide- <br /> <br /> On motion of Mrs. Webb and seconded by Mr. Barnes, the following resolution was adopted, <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE CITY OF NORFOLK FOR ATTRACTING NORFOLK <br />SOUTHERN CORPORATION TO THE CITY OF NORFOLK AND TH£ TIDEWATER AREA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Norfolk and Western Railway and Southern Railway have merged to become the <br />Norfolk Southern Corporation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the merged corporation has chosen the City of Norfolk as the location of the <br />corporate headquarters for the merged Norfolk Southern Corporation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the location of th~s unified rail system service in the Tidewater area will <br />attract new industry and encourage existing industry to exFand; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this consolidated rail service will further generate employment opportunities <br />economic growth for the City of Norfolk and the entire Tidewater area including the City of <br />Portsmouth. <br /> <br />an <br /> <br /> <br />
