This personal property tax was ~aid twice in error on the part of the <br />individual. <br /> <br /> I recommend that Council adopt this motion to re[und." <br /> <br />Finance Commissic <br />than the Real <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mrs. Webb, that refunds be granted, as requested, <br />to businesses and individuals, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> 83-181 Letter from the City Manager rec~smmending adoption of a motion to zransger <br />from the Grants Contigency Account $1,800 to purchase 5 alco sensor units for the Portsmouth <br />Police Department. <br /> <br /> "I have received notification from the Department of Transportation Safety that the <br />Police DeFartment's application for a Highway Safety project has been apprcved. The grant wi] <br />provide S~800 to purchase five alco sensor units for use by uniform patrol units in identi- <br />fying drunken drivers. It is supported entirely with federal funds. <br /> This type of program will enhance the City's efforts to curb drunk driving-related <br />accidents while also improving the efficiency of patrol officers in the field. The Depart- <br />ment plans eventually to place an alco sensor unit ~n each patrol vehicle, thus implementing <br />the program full scale as other Tidewater police departments have done. <br /> I recommend that this program be approved and that the~51,800 be transferred from the <br />Grants Contigency Account for this purpose. <br /> <br /> ~ction of Mrs. Webb and seconded by Mr. Barnes, to transfer $1,800 from the Grants <br /> Contigency Account, as requested, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> 85-182 Letter from the City Manager recommending that Item 83-160 be amended so as <br /> to increase the personal property tax rate to $4.35 per $100. <br /> "As per the wishes of City Council and in accordance with the Municipal <br /> recommendations, I have sought to find alternatmve sources of revenues other <br /> Estate tax to fund the Fiscal Year 1984 operating budget. <br /> It is my recommendation, in light of your wishes, that an amendment to the ordinance <br /> levymng taxes effective July 1, 1983, be adopted to reflect a Real ~state tax rate of $1.35 <br /> and a Tangible Personal Property tax rate of $4.35. Such a procedure would spread the burden <br /> to other citmzens ~n our c~ty that may or may not be owners of real estate." <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes and seconded by Mrs. Webb, that Item 83-160 be amended to increase <br /> the personal property tax rate to $4.35 ~er $100, and was adooted by 5rZ~ [Nay-Holley,Whitlow) <br /> vote. <br /> <br /> <br />
