Tayloe, Jr., for an employees parking lot <br /> on property west of the abandoned railroad right-of-way and <br /> lying between Princeton Place and Western Branch Boulevard. <br /> <br />of <br /> <br /> On mo~ion of Mr. Beamer and seconded by Mr. Corprew, to concur in the recommendation of <br />the Planning Commission, UP 85-5 for an employees parking lot on property west of the <br />abondoned railroad right-of-way and lying between Princeton Place and Western Branch Boulevard, <br />and was approved on first reading by 3-1-3 (~y-Lucg~] vote. <br /> <br />Council reeessed at 9:25 p.m.; and re-convened at 9:40 p.m. <br /> <br />Mayor Holley presided for the remainder of the Council meeting. <br /> <br /> 85-i0I(d) Motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mrs. Webb, to suspend the rules to allow thc <br />following speakers from Frederick Military Academy, and was adopted by unanimous vote: <br /> <br /> Ron Steffey, 1801 Portsmouth Boulevard, representing Frederick Military Academy, requested <br />additional time. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Beamer and seconded by Mr. Gray, that Mr. Steffey be granted an additional <br />five minutes, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steffey asked the City Council for their support in keeping Frederick Military Academy <br />opened and that a resolution be considered supporting the Academy. <br /> <br /> Robert Laakkoren, 1801 Portsmauth Boulevard, representing Frederick Military Academy, <br />requested five additional minutes to speak. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Beamer and seconded by Mrs. Webb, that Cadet Laakkoren be granted the addi- <br />tional time, as requested, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> Cadet Laakkoren spoke on behalf of the Cadet Corps of Frederick Hilitary Academy, to <br />support the Academy in remaining open and to give the young people a chance to succeed whereby <br />they may not have the opportunity. (Approximately 40 Cadets from Frederick Military Academy <br />were present) <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Beamer and seconded by Mrs. Webb, the following resolution was adonted, <br />and by the following voze: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF FREDERICK MILITARY ACADEMY. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Frederick Military Academy was founded by Portsmouth <br />Beazley, a Portsmouth native, and opened its doors on September 9, <br />265 Cadets; and <br /> <br />Philanthropist Fred W. <br />1958 with an enrollment <br /> <br />of <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Academy ms currently situated on a 22 acre campus off Portsmouth Boulevard <br />with an enrollment of 205 students; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, sixty-five per cent of the students are from the Tidewater area and ninety per <br />cent go on to receive higher education with many s~udents accepted into our National Service <br />Academys with anticipation of military careers; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Academy employs ninety persons with a payroll exceeding $1,250,000 annually, <br />and the school has been an asset economically, morally and educationally for the City of Ports- <br />mouth and its citizens; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this fine school has lived up to its ~ot~o: "To Provide Quality Education For <br />Worthy Young People And Prepare Them For The Future"; and <br /> <br /> ~FHEREAS, the school represents knowledge, truth, and valor to the City of Portsmouth and <br />the entire Tidewater Area; and <br /> <br /> I~HEREAS, its supporting Foundations_ has <br />closing of Frederick Military Academy; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a group of its supporters have <br />existence of Frederick Military Academy. <br /> <br />indicated that financial restraints dictate the <br />commenced a campaign to assure the continued <br /> <br /> <br />
