October 24, 2023 <br /> <br />23 - 347 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting Radiological Emergency <br />Preparedness funds in the amount of $700 from the Virginia Department of <br />Emergency Management and appropriating said amount in the FY 2024 Grants <br />Fund for use by the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services to <br />enhance the HAZMAT Team’s response capabilities. <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br /> The Virginia Department of Emergency Management recognizes the critical role of <br />emergency management at the local level. Strong local emergency management <br />programs keep the Commonwealth safer and allow all of us to respond and recover <br />effectively and efficiently when a radiological emergency or disaster occurs. <br /> <br /> The purpose of the Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program is to support <br />the activities of local emergency management agencies in establishing, maintaining and <br />operating such emergency plans, programs and capabilities to deal with nuclear <br />accidents as are required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal <br />Emergency Management Agency with respect to nuclear power stations. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br /> This funding will be used to purchase and maintain equipment to enhance our <br />HAZMAT Team’s response capabilities to radiological incidents. <br /> <br />Financial impact: <br /> <br /> This program does not require a local cash match and\\or In-Kind services. <br /> <br />Recommended Action: <br /> <br /> Adoption of the ordinance. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br /> <br /> The Finance Department will assign the budget code. <br /> <br /> The funds will be used for the PFRES HAZMAT Team. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Barnes, and seconded by Ms. Lucas-Burke, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />“ORDINANCE ACCEPTING RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS <br />FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $700 FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF <br />EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND APPROPRIATING SAID AMOUNT IN THE FY <br />2024 GRANTS FUND FOR USE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FIRE, RESCUE AND <br />EMERGENCY SERVICES TO ENHANCE THE HAZMAT TEAM’S RESPONSE <br />CAPABILITIES.” <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Hugel, Lucas-Burke, Moody, Tillage, Whitaker, Glover <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />23 - 348 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting with appreciation a donation in the <br />amount of $1,000 from the FESCO Emergency Sales Company and appropriating <br />said amount in the FY 2024 Grants Fund for use by the Department of Fire, Rescue <br />and Emergency Services for the Women in Public Service Conference in March <br />2024. <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br /> The Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services administers and will <br />host the Women in Public Service Conference in March 2024. <br /> <br /> The purpose of the Women in Public Service Conference is to honor and promote <br />women in public service to include individuals from fire and rescue, law enforcement, <br />administration, and uniformed services, both men and women alike. The WIPS <br />Conference provides an ideal platform for attendees to delve into the challenges faced <br />by women, discovering real-world solutions and forging invaluable connections. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
