The park is
located in the Wilson Ward/Gosport area at 2715 Bagley Street. The City and the civic
league have worked in partnership over the past six years to develop and add amenities
to the City-owned parcel. It was formally dedicated as a park at a June 5, 2021 dedication
ceremony.

Discussion:

According to Parks & Recreation policy, the park naming request was verified by
City staff and then brought forth to the Parks and Recreation Commission. During the
Commission meeting on March 23, 2022, the commission allowed for public input on the
naming request. All Commission members that were in attendance also had the
opportunity to make a statement for, against or neutral; and a brief discussion took place
before voting on the agenda item. The Commission voted unanimously in favor of naming
the parcel at 2715 Bagley Street the Wilson Ward/Gosport Meditation Garden based on
the Civic League’s long history of positive contributions to the City of Portsmouth. The
renaming application request and accompanying documentation is included for City
Council review.
