The BVP Program is administered by the U.S. <br />Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). <br /> <br /> The purpose of the BVP Program is to reimburse states, counties, federally <br />recognized tribes, cities, and local jurisdictions that employ law enforcement officers for <br />up to 50% of the total cost of body armor vests purchased for those officers. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br /> Portsmouth has received grant funding in the amount of $11,355 from the <br />Department of Justice (DOJ) – Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for the purchase of <br />bulletproof vests for the Portsmouth Police Department and Sherriff’s Office personnel. <br /> <br /> Bulletproof vests will be purchased with a 50/50 allocation between the General Funds <br />(Police and Sherriff Department’s budgets) and the grant funds. The grant will reimburse <br />50% of the cost expended for the purchase of bulletproof vests. <br /> <br /> The Police Department’s match for the grant is $2,805 and the Sheriff’s Office match is <br />$8,550. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br /> <br /> <br /> The matching funds are already in the Portsmouth Police Department’s General <br />Fund budget and the Sherriff’s Office General Fund budget. <br /> <br />Recommended Action: <br /> <br /> Adoption of an Ordinance <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br /> <br /> The Finance Department will make the necessary budget adjustment.
