May 12, 2020

13) I am writing I have a problem with the new proposed tax increases that should
concern you also.

Why does raising taxes always seem to be the answer? Why can’t the council use
and apply, Critical Thinking? Is it because just taxing the hell out of an already
poor city is the easy way out?!
You are going to lose residents at an even faster pace. The council already has
such a sad reputation.

Connect the dots and see what’s right in front of you. Please say a hard NO to
these new increases. They do not help the people! Many aren’t even aware of
this proposal and it will pass like a thief in the night.
Thank you for your time and hopeful consideration.
Lori Young
3789 Lilac Drive

14) Voicemail
"My name is Jean Swindles I live at 31 30 sterling way. Portsmouth number is 757-
4848 to 6 0.We do not need any more taxes such as the Food tax and Portsmouth.
Portsmouth is struggling. We need more restaurants. Another added tax is not
going to help anybody. Especially, some of the people that live here are people
that even may come here for dinner. I'm opposed to all tax increase, especially the
poor, thank you. Bye, bye."

15) This is not the time to increase taxes--Portsmouth Restaurants have a rough time
as it is in good times let alone during the COVID-19 crisis.
This is a bad decision. Please rethink this one.

Dolores Cherrington

16) Voicemail
This email is in response to several articles published in the Virginian Pilot recently
per the budget recommendations presented by Dr Patton , including increased
meal and personal property taxes!
My husband and I have been trying to support Portsmouth as much as we can by
getting take out from Portsmouth restaurants frequently so our restaurants can
survive. It sounds like you’ll want to make sure they all close!! Why would I want
to get food in Portsmouth if I can drive 5 or 10 minutes longer and not pay an
increased meal tax? We already pay one of the highest personal property taxes in
the area without it being increased again, especially when so many residents have
significantly decreased income due to COVID 19. Even though I’ve lived in
Portsmouth for over 20 years, it never ceases to amaze me how little regard
Portsmouth seems to have for it’s residents! Thank you for your consideration of
our concerns.
Sherry Ferki
3114 Sterling Point Drive

17) Voicemail
"This is Sondra Underwood484-8167. I live in Mary Feels. I have for 50 years. I've
never been so disappointed in our city. We can no longer afford to stay in
Portsmouth. Just about every adoption that you have, an ordinance resolution.
Whichever you call it, my tax money, I don't see. Any benefits? we're getting from
them, except the increased on our? Nothing? Absolutely, as I scan the system? I
vote no to all the adoptions and hope all our citizens feel the same way. We can
no longer put up with chasing good people out of Portsmouth."
