This code, which incorporates most of
~he BOCA Existing Structures Code was adopted as a mandatory s~a~e-
set of regulations, effective October 1, 1986.

The code changes implement BOCA as the City Minimum Housing
Code, spell out tke role of the Housing Board of Adjustments and
~eals, reference the new code as part of the rental inspection
program and incorporate the higher penalty for violations allowed
BOCA.

The new code, which will be used for all housing inspections
.g rental properties is very similar to the Southern Standar~
which has been the City's minimum housing reference. The BOCA
,de in general is more detailed and uses more direct language. It
Jill, for example, allow us to cite for paint peeling on surfaces in
~ddition to just wood, and will allow us to require replacement of
~utters, not just removal. The only item of substance from the
{outhern Standard Code that does not have a counterpart in BOCA is
~ general proFerty maintenance requirement referred to as "Care of
~remises". A similar provision is being added by amendment in the
~nclosed code revisons.
