Motion by Mr. Edmonds, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $30,000 FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND APPROPRIATING SAID FUNDS IN THE FY 2011-12 GRANTS FUND FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TEAM EQUIPMENT, EXERCISE, AND TRAINING." Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Heretick, Moody, Randall, Whitehurst, Wright Nays: None 12 - 186 -Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $243,664 from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs in aid to Locality 2012 Funds and appropriating said sum in the FY 2011-12 Grants Fund to support fire and emergency services in the City. Background: • The Virginia Department of Fire Programs has been providing entitlement funds to localities for more than twenty years. • "Aid to Localities" provides Virginia cities, towns and counties with funds to pay for training, construction of training centers, firefighting equipment, and protective clothing. • The funds are derived from one-percent of fire-related insurance coverage and are allocated based on population. Discussion: • This year, the City of Portsmouth has been notified that it will receive $243,664.00 in Fire Program Funds. • Each year, the City must report to the Department of Fire Programs how the money is used. • This year funds will be used to support fire and emergency services within the City. Motion by Ms. Randall, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $243,664 FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF FIRE PROGRAMS IN AID TO LOCALITY 2012 FUNDS AND APPROPRIATING SAID SUM IN THE FY 2011- 12 GRANTS FUND TO SUPPORT FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES IN THE CITY."
