Vision Principle: Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />• Move forward to achieve grant goals. <br />Motion by Mr. Edmonds, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br />"ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $30,000 FROM THE <br />VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND APPROPRIATING <br />SAID FUNDS IN THE FY 2011-12 GRANTS FUND FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS <br />TEAM EQUIPMENT, EXERCISE, AND TRAINING." <br />Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Heretick, Moody, Randall, Whitehurst, Wright <br />Nays: None <br />12 - 186 -Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $243,664 <br />from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs in aid to Locality 2012 Funds and <br />appropriating said sum in the FY 2011-12 Grants Fund to support fire and <br />emergency services in the City. Vision Principle: Neighborhoods and a Sense of <br />Community. <br />Background: <br />• The Virginia Department of Fire Programs has been providing entitlement funds to localities <br />for more than twenty years. <br />• "Aid to Localities" provides Virginia cities, towns and counties with funds to pay for training, <br />construction of training centers, firefighting equipment, and protective clothing. <br />• The funds are derived from one-percent of fire-related insurance coverage and are allocated <br />based on population. <br />Discussion: <br />• This year, the City of Portsmouth has been notified that it will receive $243,664.00 in Fire <br />Program Funds. <br />• Each year, the City must report to the Department of Fire Programs how the money is used. <br />• This year funds will be used to support fire and emergency services within the City. <br />Financial impact: <br />• These grant funds require no local cash match. <br />Recommended Action: <br />• Adoption of the ordinance. Vision Principle: Neighborhoods and a Sense of <br />Community. <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />• Acquire additional fire protection equipment and continue to provide necessary training for <br />our fire personnel. <br />Motion by Ms. Randall, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br />"ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $243,664 FROM THE <br />VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF FIRE PROGRAMS IN AID TO LOCALITY 2012 <br />FUNDS AND APPROPRIATING SAID SUM IN THE FY 2011- 12 GRANTS FUND TO <br />SUPPORT FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES IN THE CITY." <br />Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Heretick, Moody, Randall, Whitehurst, Wright <br />Nays: None <br />
