Apri% i2~ 1988 <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT AN <br />APPLICATION FOR FUNDING TO THE BUSINESS CONSORTIUM FOR ARTS <br />SUPPORT. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia <br />created the Department of Museums to coordinate the City's <br />cultural activities within the boundaries of the City; and <br /> <br />has <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Virginia Commission for the Arts provides <br />funding to enhance local cultural programs; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth is eligible to submit grant <br />applications for funding pursuant to regulations governing the <br />administration and use of such funds. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City Manager be, and he hereby is, <br />authorized to submit an application for funding to The Business <br />Consortium for Arts Support to support programming and exhibitions <br />scheduled for FY-t988-89." <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Lucas, Simpson, Williams, Webb <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 88-151 - Letter from <br />of a resolution endorsing <br />authorizing submittance of <br />Department of Education. <br /> <br />the City Manager recommending adoption <br />the Workplace Literacy Program and <br />the application to the Virginia <br /> <br /> "I am pleased to inform you that the City of Portsmouth is <br />eligible to apply for a Workplace 5iters~y Program, sponsored by <br />the Virginia Department of Education. The State Department is <br />initiating these p~ograms in local governments to upgrade the <br />academic skills of potentially displaced workers in order that <br />they may keep abreast of technological changes in the workplace. <br /> <br /> Portsmouth's proposal from the Department of Personnel <br />focuses on identifying reading and math skills related to the <br />workplace and interg~ating those skills into a broader Adult Basic <br />Education instructional program. The Department will be <br />responsible for coordinating instructional services with the <br />Portsmouth Public Schools and 80 city employees are expected to <br />directl~y benefit from the program. <br /> <br /> The State Department of Education provides up to 50% of the <br />funds to operate a Workplace Literacy Program. The Personnel <br />Department will provide the required 50% local match through the <br />departmental budget.I <br /> <br /> I highly recommend your support of this program and request <br />your authorization to submit the application to the Virginia <br />Department of Education. I have enclosed a resolution of support <br />for your endorsement.i" <br /> <br /> On motion of MrS.
