Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of
Community.

Background:
. The Virginia Department of Transportation provides funding annually to cities and
towns in the form of a designated rate payment per lane mile of approved length of
streets in a city.

Discussion:
. The amount of funds we will receive increased by $604 per lane mile of arterial
streets and by $355 per lane mile of collector and local streets. Applying these
increases to our lane miles of arterial and local streets results in an increase in funds for
FY1 0-11 of $357,135.

Financial Impact:
. The $357,135 increase in funding will be added to the Department of Public
Works FY1 0-11 operating budget for street maintenance in the street overlay program.

Recommended Action:
. Recommend adoption of an ordinance appropriating $357,135 received from the
Virginia Department of Transportation representing the increase in annual highway
maintenance funds to the City of Portsmouth for FY10-11. The addition funds will be
added to the Public Works FY10-11 operating budget for street maintenance. Vision
Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community.

Next Steps:
. The additional funds will be added to the Public Works FY1 0-11 operating budget
for street maintenance.
. Proceed with the FY10-11 Operating budget with the inclusion of the subject
funds.
