Since this date, a ser~ies of ~ctions <br />have been taken by both the City and the School Board to bring <br />this projec~t to~fr, u.ition. The Portsmout{~ City Council' on <br />January 12~, l~988~appropriated $892,000[ :for~ t~he de's}gn of the <br />proposed High School.~,' This contrac~ included a design of the <br />school facility as well as the PIT gymnasium, football field <br />and recreation master plan. The firm of HBA Architecture and <br />Interior Design Wa~ s~lected as th~ A ~ E firm~ For summary <br />purposes, it was the consensus of City Council, the School <br />Board and'~respective staffs that the need for a.new high school <br />did exist and wou~ld provide fo~: <br /> <br /> o Optimum physical layout~or modern ed'ucationat <br /> facility. <br /> <br /> o-'Smooth'transition from~n old school to s new <br /> f-acft,ity~ <br /> <br />o Location adjacent to other educational <br /> facilities ~n Churchland. <br /> <br />Truancy, security, noise <br />associated with current <br />significantly reduced. <br /> <br />and safety problems <br />location could be <br /> <br />o -improved accessibility~from Western Freeway~ <br /> <br />o would more than satisfy the open space require- <br /> ments Up to the year 200,0 for the Churchland <br /> area~ by providing-,recreational space (as part of <br /> ~master plan for Churchl~nd Park). <br /> <br />o Construction of a new fire station since the <br /> anticipated recreational deficiency would be <br /> elimi'nated. <br /> <br />o Potential sale of the high school site for a net <br /> of $'3,000,000. · <br /> <br /> <br />
