The Director of Communications/
Emergency Services recommends that $200,000 be appropriated for
installation as follows:
C & P Current Estimate: $190,745
Contingency 9,255
$200,000

Presently, implementation is scheduled for September 11, 1989.

The E-911 system utilizes a computerized system to
automatically route emergency telephone calls to the proper public
safety answering point serving the jurisdiction from which the
emergency telephone call was placed. In other words, only
Portsmouth residents will be served by Portsmouth dispatchers,
telephone customers with shared exchanges, but who actually live
in Chesapeake or Suffolk, will automatically be transferred to
their respective jurisdictions.

Additionally, the E-911 system will provide Automatic Number
Identification (ANI) and Automatic Location Identification (ALI)
to dispatchers on each call received. The system also has the
ability to transfer the ANI/ALI informatien~to any southside
Hampton Roads city should this be necessary for an emergency
response across city boundaries. Finally, the E-911 system is
compatible and may interface with any computer aided dispatch
system for additional, enhanced capabilities in the future.
