July 11, 1989 <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> 89-289 - An ordinance to amend the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia,-1988, by amending the ordinance <br />establishing the Mayor's Sister Cities Commission from the City <br />of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Barnes and seconded by Mr. Simpson.,~the,' <br />following ordinance was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING THE ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING THE <br />MAYOR'S SISTER CITIES'COMMISSION FROM TEE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH." ~ <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 89-290 - Resolution changing the name of the "Mayor's <br />Committee on the Handicapped" to the Mayor's Committee For <br />Persons With Disabilities. <br /> <br /> On'motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Barnes, the <br />following resolution was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION CHANGING THE NAME OF THE "MAYOR'S COMMITTEE <br />ON THE HANDICAPPED" TO THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR PERSONS <br />WITH DISABILITIES. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, by resolutions adopted by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, on July 27, 1987 and November 22, <br />1987, the "Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped" was created <br />for the purpose of advising and informing the public and <br />private sectors of the City of Portsmouth and environs of the <br />problems facing handicapped persons; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Committee has advised the Mayor and City <br />Council that it appea~s that the term "handicapped" has <br />developed a negative connotation and requested that the <br />Committee be renamed. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia that this committee be and the same <br />hereby is hereafter known as the "Mayor's Committee for Persons <br />with Disabilities" and that this committee shall continue to <br />fulfill the sam~ function and purpose as previously set forth <br />by Resolutions :bf this Council.' <br /> <br /> Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb <br /> Nays: Ngne <br /> <br /> 89-291 - Robert M. Jones, 3925 Two Oaks Road spoke <br />concerninG his request of Council to look into matters of his <br />retirement from the Police Department and working conditions <br />at the Police Department. <br /> <br /> The City Manager will brief Mrs. Lucas and Mr. Simpson on <br />the matter. <br /> <br /> <br />
