July 11, 1989 NEW BUSINESS - 89-289 - An ordinance to amend the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,-1988, by amending the ordinance establishing the Mayor's Sister Cities Commission from the City of Portsmouth. On motion of Mr. Barnes and seconded by Mr. Simpson.,~the,' following ordinance was adopted and by the following vote: "AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING THE ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING THE MAYOR'S SISTER CITIES'COMMISSION FROM TEE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH." ~ Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb Nays: None 89-290 - Resolution changing the name of the "Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped" to the Mayor's Committee For Persons With Disabilities. On'motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Barnes, the following resolution was adopted and by the following vote: "A RESOLUTION CHANGING THE NAME OF THE "MAYOR'S COMMITTEE ON THE HANDICAPPED" TO THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES. WHEREAS, by resolutions adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, on July 27, 1987 and November 22, 1987, the "Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped" was created for the purpose of advising and informing the public and private sectors of the City of Portsmouth and environs of the problems facing handicapped persons; and WHEREAS, the Committee has advised the Mayor and City Council that it appea~s that the term "handicapped" has developed a negative connotation and requested that the Committee be renamed. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia that this committee be and the same hereby is hereafter known as the "Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities" and that this committee shall continue to fulfill the sam~ function and purpose as previously set forth by Resolutions :bf this Council.' Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb Nays: Ngne 89-291 - Robert M. Jones, 3925 Two Oaks Road spoke concerninG his request of Council to look into matters of his retirement from the Police Department and working conditions at the Police Department. The City Manager will brief Mrs. Lucas and Mr. Simpson on the matter.
