<br />March 9. 2010 <br /> <br />"RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA <br />OPPOSING THE CLOSING OF THE CRADOCK STATION BY THE UNITED STATES <br />POSTAL SERVICE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service is currently considering a number <br />of cost cutting measures to offset a continuing trend of declining revenues; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, among the measures being considered is the closing of a number of <br />postal facilities in the Richmond District, including the Cradock Station in the City of <br />Portsmouth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cradock neighborhood, a designated historic district, was <br />originally designed as a planned, self-sufficient development, with a commercial center <br />and other amenities necessary for a viable community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cradock Station has for years served the purpose of providing <br />convenient postal services for the Cradock residents, particularly the community's <br />senior citizens and those with limited mobility; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the proposed closure of this longstanding neighborhood facility will <br />impose a significant hardship on Cradock residents who will be required to travel a great <br />distance to obtain the postal services now provided locally in a convenient location. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that it hereby expresses its strong opposition to the closing of the <br />Cradock Station in the historic Cradock section of the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send a copy of <br />this Resolution to Postmaster Robert Shaw at the Portsmouth Main Post Office for <br />inclusion in the documents to be considered prior to a final decision on the proposed <br />closing. <br /> <br />FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Manager is directed to take such <br />additional steps as he deems appropriate in this matter." <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- New Business - <br /> <br />10 - 118 - Boards and Commissions <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Ms. Psi mas, to close nominations, and <br />the above nominations were adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />THE PLANNING COUNCIL <br /> <br />Councilman Douglas L. Smith to be appointed to a term, replacing Councilman Charles <br />Whitehurst, Sr. <br /> <br />Councilman Charles Whitehurst, Sr. was named Council Liaison to the Planning <br />Commission. <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />10 - 119 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br />'Y Mr. Whitehurst asked when City Council would be provided with an update on <br />information pertaining to the Social Security offset for retirees and retired pay for fire <br />fighters and police officers. <br />
