Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning Community. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />. Pending approval, the Director of Museums and the Curator of the Courthouse <br />Galleries will ensure that the funds are utilized for the development, installation and <br />programming for the Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition. <br /> <br />Motion by Ms. Randall, and seconded by Mr. Moody, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $10,550 FROM THE <br />BUSINESS CONSORTIUM FOR ARTS SUPPORT AND APPROPRIATING SAID <br />AMOUNT IN THE FY 2009-2010 GRANTS FUND FOR THE OUTDOOR SCULPTURE <br />COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION AT THE COURTHOUSE GALLERIES." <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />09 - 365 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $57,000 from the <br />U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement and appropriating <br />said amount in the FY 2009-2010 Grants Fund for use for the 2009 "Smart Art" After- <br />School Program. Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning Community. <br /> <br />Background: <br />. This is the second grant we have received from the United States Department of <br />Education: Office of Innovation and Improvement for an after school program in the arts. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />. The Courthouse Galleries will use the funds for the development, implementation <br />and evaluation of a two-year after school program. <br />. This is the second grant that the department has received for an after-school <br />program. <br />. The previous program was evaluated by an outside evaluator and showed <br />significant improvement in behavior, attendance and grades for those students that <br />participated in the program. <br />. The program is geared towards 4th and 5th grade students and requires parental <br />participation. <br />. The program will be held over two years and two Portsmouth Public Schools will <br />participate. <br />. One semester the students will be on-site at the Courthouse Galleries, the other <br />in the classroom of their school. <br />. At the end of each semester an art show and reception will be held. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br />. The match will be in-kind. <br /> <br />Staff Recommends: <br />.
