Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods
and a Sense of Community and Bold New Directions.

Background:
. The Portsmouth Police Department has received grant funding of $7,099.00 from
the Department of Criminal Justice Services to provide funds for equipment, job fair
registration and travel.

Discussion:
. The Portsmouth Police Department has utilized funds from this grant in the past
and was very successful in its approach to recruit and retain highly qualified diverse
individuals for a career in law enforcement with a focus on increasing the number of
minority candidates to better reflect the community. Utilizing funds from this grant for
recruitment teams to travel to job fairs, festivals and other functions would assist the
Department with its goal of "full staffing levels."

Financial Impact:
. The City must provide a 25% cash match of $1,775. There is no continuing
obligation from the City once the grant has ended.

Staff Recommends:
Adoption of an ordinance. Vision Principles: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of
Community and Bold New Directions.

Next Steps Following Council Action:
.
