September 9. 2008 Next Steps Following Council Action: . The Chief of Police or his designee will provide grant management and oversight. Motion by Mr. Heretick, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $529,824 FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND APPROPRIATING $513,426 OF SAID GRANT IN THE FY 2008-2009 GRANTS FUND FOR USE BY THE PORTSMOUTH POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR PORT SECURITY EQUIPMENT." Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley Nays: None 08 - 376 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $7,099 from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and appropriating said amount in the FY 2008-2009 Grants Fund for use by the Portsmouth Police Department for equipment, job fair registration, and travel. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community and Bold New Directions. Background: . The Portsmouth Police Department has received grant funding of $7,099.00 from the Department of Criminal Justice Services to provide funds for equipment, job fair registration and travel. Discussion: . The Portsmouth Police Department has utilized funds from this grant in the past and was very successful in its approach to recruit and retain highly qualified diverse individuals for a career in law enforcement with a focus on increasing the number of minority candidates to better reflect the community. Utilizing funds from this grant for recruitment teams to travel to job fairs, festivals and other functions would assist the Department with its goal of "full staffing levels." Financial Impact: . The City must provide a 25% cash match of $1,775. There is no continuing obligation from the City once the grant has ended. Staff Recommends: Adoption of an ordinance.
