March 27, 2007 07 - 139 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $45,885 from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and appropriating said amount in the FY 2006-2007 Grants Fund Budget for use by the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for the EXILE Program. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. Background: . The City of Portsmouth has received a grant from DCJS for continuation funding of the EXILE Grant, administered by the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. . This grant program's focus is directed towards aggressively utilizing enhanced state laws for possession of illegal firearms to prosecute offenders, along with current bail procedures to keep violent offenders in jail during the prosecution phase. . This program provides for a full-time prosecutor who is experienced in vigorous prosecution, program management and community awareness campaigns. Discussion: . The EXILE Grant will provide for one full-time prosecutor dedicated 100% to the Grant's objectives. . It is estimated that this program will open in excess of 200 cases annually. Financial Impact: . There is a cash match required of the City at a rate of 25% of the total award or $15,294. Staff Recommends: Adoption of proposed ordinance. The continuation of our EXILE Program focusing on the prosecution offenders possessing illegal firearms. Motion by Mr. Heretick, and seconded by Ms. Randall, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $45,885 FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SERVICES AND APPROPRIATING SAID AMOUNT IN THE FY 2006-2007 GRANTS FUND BUDGET FOR USE BY THE COMMONWEALTH'S ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR THE EXILE PROGRAM."
