JULIAN'S CREEK <br />ANNEX, OR OTHER LOCATION." <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Pitts, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />03 - 88 - Adoption of an ordinance to appropriate $74,320 in the Grants Fund for the <br />purchase of protective and response equipment for emergencies for the Departments of <br />Fire and Police. <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />· Adoption of an ordinance to appropriate $74,320 in the Grant Fund for the purchase <br />of protective and response equipment for domestic preparedness for the Departments <br />of Fire and Police. <br /> <br />Purpose and Need: <br /> <br />· The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has awarded the City $74,320 <br />for grant years 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. <br /> <br />· The allocation of funds will be split evenly between the two departments for the <br />purchase of protective and response equipment to prepare and to combat weapons of <br />mass destruction events. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br /> <br />· There will be no local match required. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Benn, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $74,320 IN THE GRANTS FUND FOR THE <br />PURCHASE OF EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT FOR THE POLICE AND FIRE <br />DEPARTMENTS." <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Pitts, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />03 - 89 - Adoption of an ordinance to amend and reordain Section 22-15 of the Code of <br />the City of Portsmouth, Virginia (1988) to give the Sheriff and Sheriff's Deputies the right <br />to stop property-carrying vehicles for inspection and information, but only as to weight. <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />· Amendment of the City Code to give Sheriff and Sheriff's Deputies the right to stop <br />property-carrying vehicles for inspection and information, but only as to weight. <br /> <br />Purpose and Need: <br /> <br />· The present City Code gives police officers the right to stop property-carrying <br />vehicles for inspection and information. This authority is not given to Sheriff and <br />Sheriff's Deputies. <br /> <br />· The Sheriff's Office will become increasingly active in checking for overweight <br />vehicles. It is necessary to expand the authority to stop and inspect vehicles for weight <br />checks to include the Sheriff and Sheriff's Deputies. This authority to stop for other <br />purposes will remain limited to police officers. <br /> <br /> <br />
