Gentlemen:--Tour Fire Committee respectfully reports herein con-

cerning the several matters referred to the Joint Fire Committee August ltth and 21st~
Referred by Board of Aldermen ~ugust 18th.

i petition of Dr. F. S. Hope and sundry other physicians for a fire-alarm-box in the ~ings

Daughters~ Hospital.
It is recommended that the petition be granted, and that the said fire-alarm-

box be installed under supervision of the Chief of the Fire Department.
It is ~rther retouch&ed that a fire-alarm-box be located on the ¢o~maer of High and Green sts.,
this being in the center of a growing business section and is not properly protected against fire~
As these boxes would cost $125 each, it is recommended that a special appropriation be made to
cover the cost--the cost of installing, dc., to come out of the regular appropriation to the Fire

Department. Referred by the two branches August ltth and 21st.

(~ith power to act]. To see if arrangements can be made for allowing the paid men ~ef the Cham-
bers Fire Company to go on a trip with the Company from September 12th to the 20th.
We have inst~:~cted the ChiefE ngineer of the Fire Department to grant the request, provi-
ded that the leaving o£ the C~ty by said paid men will not necessitate their engine going out of

coDmission.

(Signed) ~has. R. Welton,
UNFINIS~ ~JSINESS.
First. Communications from the Hayer.

"The 0ouncil,
"Gentlemen:-
"I would ~gain call your attention

dinances regulating the s~ringing of wires, dc., and would ask that

recommended appropriation of ~250

Aug., '08.

to section 297 of the City o~
the ordinance be amended so that

a penalty of from $5 to $25 could be imposed for the violation of any of the thirteen sections of the
ordinance. .

"The only penalty that can no~ be imposed is the suspension of ali permits, rights a~ ~ranohi-
ses. This is not a practical penalty 'and would inconvenience many citizens if imposed.
~An ordinance with no penalty, or with such a penalty as I have mentioned, is apt to make the
parties to whom it applies careless.

~I am of the opinion that the companies using poles and stringing wires in the City are not com-
plying with the regulations in the ordinances~ and I have detailed, a me~Oer of the police force to
examine all poles and wires and will or&er the company or companies who may have failed to comply

in stringing wirss~ &c.~ I ask that the ordinance

with the ordinance to at once do so.

"In order, though, to make them more careful

be amended as above mentioned.
"Respectfully,

"P. S. Since waiting the above the officer has partly covered the City and reports nearly one
hundred violations of the above mentioned erdinanoe."

On motion, the co?3z~nieation of the ~Iayor was referred to the Joint Ordinance Committee.
Second, Reports of Officers an& other unfinished business.
