0etober 13, 1908. <br /> <br />89 <br /> <br /> Mr. R. C. Nmrsh~ll spoke for the petitioners. He said that they desired to substitute asphalt <br /> for brick on Middle street in order to diminish the g~eat noise which would be mmde by a brick <br /> pavement, and because of that fact and because of the large proper~y interest on the stree~ he <br /> thought their request was deserving of great consideration. <br /> <br /> Mr. M~rshall was followed by Messrs. Geo. Peed and Joseph Meore, <br /> <br /> They did not think that asphalt has a g~eat advantage over brick in the matter of noise, and,~more- <br /> over, believed that a good brick pavement is not only superior to one of asphalt in ~rabilitybut <br /> it has also several ~er':.advantages, such as being cooler, More agreeable to the eye, easie~ to <br /> be cleaned, <br /> <br /> ~he ehmirman of the Street Committee stated ~lly and clearly the reasons of his committee for <br /> iSs recommendation, and read m~ny testimonials from officials of different cities in corroboration <br /> of its view of the matter. <br /> <br /> It having been suggested by several members that wooden block would be a preferable p~vement to <br />either b~iek-or.asphalt,Mr. John Howard Hall moved that the question of kinds ~F pavement be <br />committed in order that the 0o~mittee might consider other ~aterials for paving ~s well as those <br />which had been already considered. <br /> <br /> After some discussion of Mr. H~ll~s p~oposition it was lost by a vote of ~ ayes to 12 ~ys. <br /> <br /> Then the recommendation of'the Committee as to paving as well ms its other reeonumenda%ions~ not <br />previously disposed of, were adopted by the following veto, the vote being the same for each: <br /> <br /> Ayes--Hall, John Howard, Dashieii~ Hanvey, Brooks, 0orbitt, ~&~e~ty, ~e!ton~ Hail~ J. H., Jr., <br /> Jeh~son~ Leigh, Brinson, Euehanan~ 0wins~ Tyler~ Hawks, Hutehins~ <br /> <br /> Public Property-- Hon. Common Oouneil. <br /> Gentlemen:--Yott~ Public Property Committee respectfully <br /> <br />reports as to the following m~tters refer~ed to the Joint Public property Committee September 8th <br />and previously: <br /> <br /> The advisability of furnishing the Clerk with a large flat top desk. <br /> <br /> ~e have looked into the matter and recommend that the 01erk be furnished with the desk at <br />m eest of $5~.00. <br /> <br /> Authorized to purchase coal for the public buildings in open market. <br /> <br /> ~e report that seventy four (74} tens of coal hmve been purchased by the Committee in open <br />market, at $7 per ton. <br /> <br /> To hav~ built an office for the Clerk of the Cotu~t and m Council 0ha~oer. <br /> <br />~e mre taking steps in the mmtter. <br /> <br />(Signed) S.B. C. <br /> <br />also residents of Middle street~ <br /> <br />On motion, the report o~ the Committee was adopted~ ~nd the recommended appropriation of $55 for <br />a desk for the Clerk was referred to the Joint ~in~nce Committee. <br /> <br /> ~ire-- <br /> Reported verbmlly~ and recommended an appropriation of $600 to replace thm% amok_ut spent <br /> <br />by the Department in the purchase of two horses~ and a further appropriation of $3~0 to replace <br />wo~n cut fire--alarm wire. <br /> <br /> On-motion, the recommended appropriations were referred tO the Joint ~inance Committee. <br /> <br /> <br />
