June~28; 1994 "The Commissioner of the Revenue is requesting an ordinance to a~end Chapter 20 or'the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia (1988), pertaining to licenses, by adding Section 20-12 (a), and by amending sections 20-12, 20-16, 20-18 and 20-20. Amending these sections will change'business:licenses renewal date to March 1st instead of May 31st to be uniform with all Hampton Roads area localities. As this amendment provides for the earlier"collection of business licenses, this should improve the cash situation of the City during a time when historically our cash reserves~are low. I, therefore, recommend Council adopt this ordinance." Motion by Mr. Griffin, and seconded by Mr. Epperson, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 20 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988}, BY ADDING~r- THERETO SECTION 20-12 (A), AND BY AMENDING SECTIONS 20-12, 20-16(A), 20-18 A~D 20-20 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO LICENSES." Ayes: Clemons, Epperson, Griffin, Hawks, King, Pitts, Webb Nays: None 94-241 Letter from the City Manager recommending adoption of an ordinance to amend Chapter 35 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, by amending Sections 35-186 pertaining to taxation. "Recent acts of the Legislature make necessary changes to Chapter 35 of the City Code that deals with taxation. These changes deal with the definition of "substantial rehabilitation" of real estate. Changes in the City Code are necessary to bring it into compliance with State law. I, therefore, recommend adoption of this ordinance." Motion by Mr. Epperson, and seconded by Mr. Clemons, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 35 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988), BYi]~ING~SECTiON.~5~t86 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO TAXATION." Ayes: Clemons, Epperson, Griffin, Hawks, King, Pitts, Webb Nays: None 94-242 Letter from the City Manager recommending adoption of an ordinance to amend Chapter 8 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, by ~unending Section 8-33 pertaining to cable television communications. "The 1994 General Assembly of Virginia enacted changes to the laws pertaining to certain statutes. Since these requirements do not coincide with the requirements presently listed in our City Code, changes to Chapter 8 of the City Code are necessary.
