422 <br /> <br />July 12, 1~94 <br /> <br /> The proposed ordinance will amend provisions dealing with <br />utility servmce taxation. The proposed ordinance amendments <br />impose and levy a ten (10) percent tax on the monthly gross <br />charge, applicable to charges of up to thirty dollars ($30.00) <br />per month, on mobile local telecommunication service. <br /> <br />I hereby recommend your approval of this ordinance." <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Hawks, and seconded by Mr. Pitts, to adopt <br />the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 35 OF THE CODE OF THE CiTY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988), BY AMENDING SECTIONS 35-306 AND <br />35-307 THERETO, PERTAINING TO TAXATION." <br /> <br />Ayes: Hawks, Pitts, Robinett, Webb <br />Nays: Clemons, Griffin, Martin <br /> <br />94-276 Letter from the City Manager recommending adoption of <br />an ordinance to amend Chapter 35 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, pertaining to taxation by amending <br />Section 35-381. <br /> <br /> "The Commmssioner of the Revenue ms requesting an <br />ordinance to ~unend Chapter 35 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia {1988), as amended, perta±n~ng to <br />amusement admissions taxation by amending Section 35-381. <br /> <br /> This revision will allow penalty on delinquent tax <br />payments from thirty (30) days after such tax is due to the day <br />such tax is due to be uniform with other similar city taxes. <br />As this amendment provides for the charge of penalty at an <br />earlier date, this should encourage better compliance by <br /> <br />taxpayers. <br /> <br /> I, therefore, <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. <br />adopt the following ordinance, <br />vote: <br /> <br />recommend your approval of this ordinance." <br /> <br />Hawks, and seconded by Mr. Robinett, to <br /> and was adopted by the following <br /> <br /> .,AN ORDINAi~CE TO AMEND CHAPTER 35 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988), AS AMENDED, PERTAINING TO <br />TAXATION BY AMENDING SECTION 35-381 THEREOF." <br /> <br />Ayes: Clemons, Griffin, Martin, Pitts, Robinett, Webb <br />Nays: Hawks <br /> <br />94-277 - Letter from the City Manager recommending adoption of <br />a resolution to amend the agreement for creation of the Hampton <br />Roads Regional Jail Authority and appoint an alternate <br />Authority member. <br /> <br /> "The 1994 session of the Virginia General Assembly <br />authorized localities to appoint alternate voting members to <br />regional jail authorities, effective July 1. Currently, each <br />participating locality appoints a member of the governing body <br />to the H~unpton Roads Regional Jail Authority. Both the City <br />Manager and the Sheriff also serve as members. <br /> <br /> The legislation permits the governing body to appoint one <br />of its members to serve as an alternate. It also permits the <br />City Manager and the Sheriff to appoint a member of their <br />respective staffs as alternates. Each alternate will be <br />empowered to act at any meeting only for the member of the <br />Authority for whom that individual serves as alternate. <br /> <br /> <br />
