<br /> The report havin~ been read~ Mr. Hawks remarked that the ordinance to regulate traffic
<br /> on the streets was an imoortant one and he thought time should be given in which to consider
<br /> it, and he would, therefore, move that it be ordered to lie on the table until the next remu-
<br /> lar meetin~ of the body.
<br /> On motion of Mr. Baker, ~h~ request of the Portsmouth Rental A~ents Association fo~ an
<br /> amendment to section l, chaoter 5. off, he Ordinances, was reeommitted to the Ordinance Commit-
<br /> tee in order to allow the^A~socia~ion^appear Before it.
<br /> Mr. Hawks asked the Chairman of ~he Ordinance COmmittee why his Committee had not reported
<br /> &n ordinance for tunnelling under the sidewalks. The Chairman replied that the matter required
<br />/much consideration, given several reasons therefor, but that he hoped to have ma satisfactory
<br /> ordinance covering same reported soon.
<br /> After some discussion of the section with regard to the advisability of an ordinance to
<br /> es+~ablish.~he office of Police Justi¢?, the matter was referred t6 the Finance Committee to take
<br /> late eo~szder&tib~th~ c~ea~ion'o~ said office.
<br /> Then the recommendations of the Committee, as amended, were adopted by the following

<br /> Instructed to look into the several kinds of "White Way" lighting, and to ascertain the
<br />costs of same.
<br /> We report that we have looked into this matter and recommend a five circuit electric
<br />lamp for the purpose, the four bottom lights of same to burn until 1E o'clock midnight, and the
<br />top light to burn all night.
<br />
<br /> (With Finance Committee and City Attorney). Instructed to draft a contract for continuing
<br />the "White Way" on High street, between Water and Chestnut streets, when same shall have been
<br />adopted by ~he two branches of Council. Progress as to same.

<br /> (In connection with our report on the "White Way," we submit a communication from the
<br />VzroznZa Railway and Power Company concerning same).

<br /> Advisability of purchasing a Sharp Niller portable meter, and the employment of some one
<br />to test electric, gas, and water meters.

<br /> A request of the Sixth Ward Board for four additional lights at the intersection of County
<br />street with Pea~l~ County with Pine, County with Armstrong, and County with Godwin.
<br /> It is recommended that lights be placed at the corners of County and Pearl~ County
<br />and Pine, and Armstrong and Reed streets~ to be paid for out Of ~ixth Ward funds.

<br /> The report having been read, Mr. Brinson said tha~t he was~ opposed to each of~the proposi-
<br />t~ons offered oy the Assistant General Manager of the Virginia Railway and Power ~ompa~Y ~o~
<br />lighting the "Whi-te Way," and he moved that each of them be rejected. The motion was adopted.
<br /> Mr. Hawks moved to refer to the Light Committee to consider the adT%~ability of lighting
<br />High street with gas. The motion was adopted.
