On motion, the report of the Committee was adopted, the recommended approprsa~sons being <br />referred to the Finance Committee. <br /> <br />Fi re-~ <br /> <br />Hon. Common Council. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:-- Your .Fire Committee respectfully <br /> <br />reports herein <br /> <br />concerning the following matters referred to the Joint Fire Committee April 8-15 and March i1~ <br /> <br />1913: <br /> <br /> Referred by Common Council April 8th. <br /> <br />the Fire Board for an appropriation of $4~5.00 to pay <br /> <br /> A request of for uniforming paid men <br />of the Fire Department. <br /> It is recommended that the request of ,the Fire Board for an appropriation of $4~5.00 <br />be granted for the purpose. <br /> <br /> A petition of R; A. Alexander and other paid men of the Fire Department for an increase <br />of pay. <br /> It is recommended that an increase of $5,00 per month be made for all paid men of the <br />Fire Department. <br /> <br /> Advisabilit~ of nutting paid men of the Fire Department on the same basis as the Police <br />partment, that is to say that they continue in offmce durlng.~good behavior.. <br /> It is recommemded that paid men of the Fire DepartMent continue in office duri~,g t~heir <br />terms of good behavior. <br /> <br />Referred by Board of.~ldermen April 15th. <br /> <br /> Recommit.ted. Recommendation to place fire-alarm.boxes at the corners of Green & Ootumb~a~ <br />Jefferson & Fifth, and Cooke & North streets; and to consider alee other d~vices for protectmo~ <br />from. fire. <br /> ~e report that we do not consider that this ma~ter belongs to ~he Fire ~omm~tee. <br /> <br />Referred by Common Council March llth. <br /> <br /> Authorized to advertise for bids to supply material for new work on the fire-alarm ~ele- <br />graph system. <br /> We have so advertised and have received ~ue bidfrom Th~ Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph <br />0o. of New York City, for $1~?.00. <br /> The Committee recommends that this bid b~ accepted, and that th~ amount allowed .in <br />the Budget for said work be made available. <br /> <br /> Authorized to advertise for bids to supply the Annex Fire Company with a bell. Progress as to same. <br /> <br /> It is ~rther recommended that an.appropriation o~ $75.00 be made for purchase of land <br />in the rear of the Union House, out of the $100o00 allowed zn the Budget for same, in accordance <br />with the Plane submitted for said land. <br /> <br /> It is further recommended ~ha~ the Committee be authorized to advertise for bids to <br />sell a horse attached to the Chambers hose wagon and also a horse attached to the Park View <br />gine~ <br /> (Signed). Dewson, <br /> Chairman C. ¢. <br /> <br /> - With regard to appropriatio~ of $4~5.00.to p~y for uniforming the paid men of the Fire De- <br />partment, Mr. Johnson said he objected, to un~formi~g the paidmen, and Mr. Reynolds t~hought that, <br />if the paid men were to be uniformed, the City ought to pay for t~e uniforms. <br /> N~. P~nvey dontended that it would work a hardehip~on the pazd men of the Department~o <br />quire them to pay for their uniforms, and D~ though? the .m~tter of increase of pay and of put- <br />ting the paid/men of the Department on the same basis as the men of 'th? Police Department should <br />~e considered by the Fire 9ommit~ee i~ conjunction With the Board of Fire COmmiSsioners. <br /> He offered the following resolution as a substitute for the recommendations to appropriate <br />$~5.00 for ~niformi~g the paid men, to increase the pay of same, and to put the firemen on the <br />same basis as the policemen: <br /> "~EREAS it is believed to be ill advised and undesi~bie ~o uniform the paid men of the <br />Portsmouth Fibre Department at the present time, for the following reasons: <br /> - ~Pendin~ before'the City C~ncil~ , . <br /> (a~ ~Request for the city to bear the e~.pense of.unm~orms for paid.men. <br /> (b') ~o require paid men to pass:~a physical examinat~o~ and te~t before appointment. <br /> (c:) To ma~e appointment of paid'Ash a'perman~nA position. <br /> .
