<br /> The regular reports of Officers for the month of June~ 1915, were presented and were order-
<br />ed to f&ke.the usual course.
<br /> A communication was read from the City Attorney ~n which he s~ate~ that a suit against ~ ~
<br />City.by E. Parks Lindsay to recover $1,S~?.~$ for lowering water pipes on County and Glasgow
<br />streets,.'had been decided against the City to am*~nt of $918.?Z, and he desired to know whether
<br />the Council wanted him to take an appeal fro~ such decision, and asked that the question be re~
<br />ferred to the Finance Committee with power to instruct h~m in the matter.
<br /> The proposition of the City Attorney was referred as desired~ and by the following

<br /> A communication was received from the Board of Police Com~issioners~ requesting that the
<br />Police force be increased by two ~plain clothes men," and said communication was referred to Po-
<br />lice Committee.

<br /> A communication was received from the Board of Police Commissioners asking to have set a-
<br /> side an appropriation of $1,000.OOas an "emergency fund" for. said Board, and the request was
<br /> referred to the Police Committee.

<br /> Nr. Hawks moved that the City Attorney be instructed to take stsp~ at once for acquiring
<br /> the land of Mr. F~edericE Allen, Miss Lizzie M. Townsend, and Mr. M0r~ie Xatz~' for the extension
<br /> of Dinwiddie street southward..
<br /> The motion was adopted~ and by the following vote:

<br /> A communication was read from the Board of Health~ notifying the Council of election of Dr~
<br />Joseph Grice as City Bacterib~ogist, for two years from July 1, 1~!$, and requesting confirma-
<br />tion of said election.
<br /> On motion, the matter was referred to a Joint Session of the two branches.
<br />
<br /> A communication was read also from the Board of Health~ notifying the Council of expiration
<br />of terme of members on said Board Jul~ !~ l~l~, and requesting election of their successors.
<br /> This matter was ~£e~ed also to a Joint Session of the two branches.

<br /> A l~tter was read ~rom the Sixth Wa~d Board-informing the Council tD~t it does not consider
<br />favorably the proposition of Ers. Jane Cassell to sell the City a strip of land running ~hrough
<br />the land known as ~Toll House~ lot~
<br /> On motion, the desire of~ Sh~d Board was adopted, and the communication was ordered to
<br />file.

<br /> A-petition of ~e C~2 Enginee~ for one month's leave of absence~ with pay, was referred to
<br />the Street Com~ittee~

<br /> A communication was read from F. J. EcGuire. contrac~0r, to the Mayor and forwarded by him,
<br />concerning a bill for work on upper High street,'in whic~h he-asked for payment of sa~d bill.
<br />~ ~ . Whereupon, Mr. H~wks offered the following resolution ~n connection therewith: "To
<br />autnormze the Finance Commmttee to have vouzher drawn and payment made of amount~ approximating
<br />$8,000.00~ due the contractors for work performed in paving upper High street~ when bills for
<br />same are properly approved, and to ~eport action to next regular meetings of Councils°"
<br /> The resolution was adopted and by the following vote:

<br /> In connection with this matter~ Mr. Hawks observed that he understood the bill of McGuire
<br /> had oeen proper~y approved~ but~ no~w~thstana~ng,, had been heia up b2
<br /> He thought ~ha% the functions of the~uditing Committee ceased when bi~ W~nt before them
<br /> properly approved~
<br /> Mr. Heath, of the Auditing Committee, said that the Committee did not believe the work had
<br />been done. according tO contract, and, therefore, were ~justified in holding up the bill.
<br /> Mr. Tyler asked if the bill was not h~d up for other reasOn~ and he thought the matter
<br /> ought to be investigated, but no further action was taken in the matter~
<br />
<br /> The'City Clerk asked for a leave of absence fo~ thirty days beginning after the next regu~
<br /> lar meetingof the Board of Aldermen~ naming D. W. Murden as his successor during his absence.
