<br /> A communication was received from the Sixth Ward Board objecting to work on Pearl street
<br />in the Seventh Ward being done at the expense of the Smxth Wa d, and say~g it will decline to
<br />approve of any such expenditure.
<br /> On motion, said communication was referred to the Street Committee.

<br /> A reply was received from the President of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in regard to
<br />quested removal of spur track from the land lately purchased by the City for a playground, say-

<br /> A petition of t~e Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. for permission to lay a cable and

<br />work on upper High street, was, on motion, referred to the Strest Committee.
<br /> A communication was received from Watts & Hatt~n, attorneys for the Water Company, request-
<br />ing settlement for money due the ~ater Company by the City, and said communication was referred
<br />to the Finance Committee and City Attorney°

<br />A copy of the School Board's annual financial statement was referred to Finance Committee.

<br /> ~ petition.was read from fireman, C. M. Bunting, to be paid $75;48
<br />sickness during the months of July and August, 1913.

<br /> A communication was read from L. C. Brinson~ Secretary of the League of Virginia Municipa-
<br />lities, requesting the City to send delegates to Convention of the League meeting at Roanoke 0c-
<br />t~ber 14-!5~ 1915.
<br /> Mr. Baker moved that the City send four delegates, two from the Common Councii~ i from
<br />the Board of Aldermen, and the Mayor, to said Convention, and~that an appropriation of $100.00
<br />be made to defray the expenses of said delsgates.
<br /> The motion was adopted, and by the following vote:

<br /> A communication from the City Sergeant, calling attention to condition of the City Jail and
<br />asking that improvements be made to same, was referredto the Public Property Committee.
<br />
<br /> Mr H~i1 stated that representatives of Grimes Battery had come before the Einance Commit~
<br />tee, asking them to consider~again ~he matter of appropriating $?,~00~00 for the mBatte~y ~
<br />room, but as the matter h~d not been ~eferred to the Con~ittee after ~ts last report on the same,
<br />and as the representatives had given some additional reasons why this appropriation should be
<br />made, the Committee had decided that the Ohairman sh~ld presen~ the matter again to the Council
<br />in order to have it recommitted, as they had no authority to consider the matter without such
<br />ref er enos o
<br /> He moved, therefore, that the matter be recommitted~
