<br />duty because of injttries received by him.
<br />
<br /> To discharge the Ordinance Committee from further consideration of the advisability of
<br />amending the ordinance in regard to the fire district, so as to permit the erection of tempo-
<br />rary buildings on the old jail lot by the School Board.

<br /> The Mayor returned his approval of the following matters adopted by the two branches of
<br />City Council January 4-12-21-26-~9th, 1915:

<br /> To authorize the Treasurer to borrow $i0,000. to meet expenses off the Public Schools for
<br />January, 1915.
<br /> To authorize the Treasurer to borrow $20,000. for Current Expenses to take care of January
<br />expenditures.
<br /> An ordinance legalizing the borrowing of $200,000. to take up that amount of City notes
<br />held by Portsmouth banks.
<br /> To grant permission to E. O. Culpepper to place a pump for the storage of gasoline on the
<br />sidewalk in front of his store at th~ northeast corner of Fourth and Fayette streets, as pro-
<br />vided for in the other applications granted, provided the work be done under the supervision
<br />and .to approval of the City Engineer and Chief of the Fire Department.
<br />t915.To authorize the Treasurer to renew notes to amount of $$8,103.95, falling due in February,
<br /> To allow the sum of $1,495.15 in settlement of the claim of F. J. McGuire for $~,848.24,
<br />for work done by him on upper High street.

<br /> A petition was received from the Plumbing Inspector asking that he be allowed $6.75 to
<br />repair the bicycle used by him and owned by the Sewerage Department, and on motion, the petition
<br />was granted.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Burgess, a bill of the City Attorney to amount of $52.10, for expenses
<br />incurred in the interest of the City, was allowed and by the following vote:

<br /> A communication was received from Mr. T. Httme, Auditor, stating that it was necessary for
<br />him to be absent from office for several weeks and requestxng that the Councils confirm the
<br />appointment of. Mr. R. Lawrence Trent as Deputy Auditor, he to perform all the duties of Auditor
<br />during his absence from office; and that the appointment o~ such.Deputy Auditor begin from Jan-
<br />uary 1st, 1915.
<br /> Whereupon, Mr. Burgess offered the following resolution:
<br /> "WHEREAS, The Auditor, Mr. T.
<br />Hume, is too unwell at present to attend to the duties of his office and probably will not be
<br />abXe: %o resume such duties for several weeks to come,
<br /> "RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL, the Board of Aldermen concurring, that Er. R.. Lawrence
<br />Trant, the Deputy appointed by Mr. Hume to act in his stead, be confirmed by these bodies and
<br />that said confirmation shall date from February let, 1915. Provided that Mr. Hume shall be re-
<br />sponsible under his bond for all official acts of the said Deputy."
