Gent-lemon:-- Your Fire Commdttee respectfully reports herein concerning the following matter referred to the Joint Fire Committee January lZ, 1915: Referred by Common Council January 12th. A petition of The Seaboard Wharf and Warehouse Company for fire:protection to its propex~ty on First street. We report that we. have instructed the Clerk to write to this Company and say that the fire engines have access to its property at this time by way of Wythe street and in the near future by the Gosport Causeway also. Referred by the Mayor. To look into the circumstances under which wooden school houses have been built on the Jail lot. Ne have considered this matter and can report only that these houses ~e~e erected in violation of section 425 of the Ordinances fixing a fire district; and recommend therefore, that said matter be referred to the Mayor. At this point,. Mr. Reynolds objected to tke recommendation of the Street Committee that the Portsmouth Pohce Relief Association be allowed use of the playground for a carnival, and moved reconsideration of the adoption of' same. The motion was adopted. He then moved that the petition be not granted, and also that no carnival exhibitions be allowed there in the future. To adopt, subject to approval by the City~ Attorney, an Ordinance legalizing the borrowing of $200,000.00, totake up that amount of City notes held by Portsmouth banks. Reoonsidered January2~th and re-adopted. To refer to Finance .Committee and Oity. Attorney, with power to act, a communication from J. Davis Reed, member of thm House of Delegates, calling attention to a bill proposed by the Tax Revision Committee to amend the present law taxing water, heat, light and power companies. Adopted Jauuary~Sth. To authorize the Treasurer ~ renew notes to amount of $28,103.~, falling due 1915. Adopted January ~6th. To authorize the Fire Committee to advertise for bids to furnish the City with hose, hose expander and couplings allowed in the Budget. Adopted January S~th. To apply to the Board of S~_~ing Fund Commissioners for a loan to the City of $3B, 000.00. Referred to the Finance Committee January 26th. Second.
