<br /> A request was received from the Chief of the Fire Dep~rtmen~ to be re-imbursed to amount
<br /> f $8.A0, paid by him to the Portsmouth Dairy Lunch Room, for breakfast furnished the ~orfolk
<br />~iremen January t~th, on account of a fire at the corner of High and Crawford streets.
<br /> On motion, the request was granted, subject to approval by the Fire Committee.
<br />A petition was read fr~m Frederick Allen to be relieved from the payment of $5.00 per
<br />month to the City for oroperty condemned for the extension of the south end of Dinwiddie street.
<br /> Mr. Earl H. ~right moved that he be relieved from the payment of $5.00 per month and
<br />given ten days' notice to move.
<br /> Mr. ~Eorgsm moved to amend, that the matter be referred to the Finance Committee.
<br /> The amendment was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Eontague called the attention of Council to the condition of the southwest corner of
<br />Oak Grove Cemetery on account of standing water.
<br /> On motion, the matter was referred to Street Committee with Cemetery Committee.
<br /> Mr. Houghton moved to refer to Rules Committee the advisability of a rule requiring com-
<br />mittees to report to Council within a z~pecified time matters refer~ed to them.
<br /> The motion was adopted.

<br /> N~. Hutohins presented the following resolution, which was adopted:
<br /> "Resolved, That the
<br />City Treasurer, City Collector and City Auditor be and are hereby instructed to meet with the
<br />Finance Committee when requested to do so by the Chairman or Vzce-Chairman, and to furnish such
<br />data as may be requested of them."

<br /> Mr. Joe. S. Moore moved that the Street Committee be authorized to advertise for bids to
<br />build a conduit across the south end of Dinwiddie street. The motion~was adopted.

<br />"Paving Sidewalks, First Street," and for repairing ~"Gosport Bridge." The motion was adopted.

<br /> By the same, That Finance Committee make available $75.00 allowed in the Budget £or "Fire
<br />Box~ Tamp and Irons." The motion was adopted.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Reynolds, the matter of fire apparatus ~or the Fourth Ward was referred
<br />to Finance Committee.

<br /> Mr. Laylor moved that the City Attorney be instructed to give his written opinion as to
<br />ihe right of a Councilman to serve as ~tate Assessor of real estate and d~aw~'any part of his
<br />pa~ for same from the City. The motion was adopted.

<br />of engines on Crawford street; and to the.condition of Chestnut street, from Duke ~o Nelson,

<br /> N~. Morga~ moved that the advisability of lights at the corner of Barren and Wilson streets,
<br />on the West Park View Bridge, be' referred to the Light Committee.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Robt. L. Moore, the matter of providing the Fire Department with a fire
<br />gong and register was referred to the Fire Committee.
<br />
<br /> On motion.of Mm. Robt. L. Moore, the condition of the roof of the Annex Engine House was
<br />referred to ~he Pu~lic PrOperty & Schools Oemmittee~ with power to act.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mr. Reynolds, the attention of the Street Committee was called to the condition
<br />of Nelson street, between Fifthand Sixth.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Grover C. Wright, the condition of the foot bridge at the north end of
<br />Cooke street was referred to the Street Committee~
<br />
<br /> Mr. Houghton moved that the Light Committee take up with the Virginia Railway & Power Com-
<br />pany the failure of lights in the Sixth ~m~d~and also that said Committee take up with the same
<br />ompany the matter of installing a light at the intersection of Queen and London~streets with
<br />Sixth avenue. The motion was adopted.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Earl H. Wright, .phs question of putting wires of the telephone and $~te~
<br />g~aph system on separate pole~, and mazntenanoe of sam~ under the supervision of one person~ was
<br />referred to the joint Finance, Polie~ and Fire committees.

<br /> On motion of ~Lr. Baldwin, the attention of th~ police was called to use of sidewalks in the~
<br />Sixth Ward by driving of teams thereon.
