The Honorable Oity 0ouncil,
Portsmouth, Va.
Gentlemen:-- . . . · · .
We, your Street Committee,_ .beg to submlt the follow½ng report.
There is to t~e credit of the Street Pavmng aoccunt.a balance of $65,740.45. Of this
mount the following appropriations have already been made, but the money has net been expended:
The extension of Dinwiddie street, south to Fifth street, $?,500.00; Paving the North end of
Water street, $2,$40.00. Which leave? a balance for Street Improvements of
With onl $B3 405.4B for street mmprovements, .and streets re.erred to the Commmttee for
consideration~ the'improvement of which aggregates $110,000.00, and many of these streets being
thoroughfares and badly in need of pavements, the selection of a limited number for improve-
merits to the exclusion of so many has been rather a difficult undertaking. Tour Committee has,
after duly considering the importance and claim of all the streets before it, made a selection
of those streets which, in the judgment of the Committee, should be paved at this time. In
der, however, that each member of the Coyncil may have an opportunm y t.o fully consider the re-
commendation of the Committee, a tabulation is given below 6f all the streets considered by the
Committee, with the approximate cost of each, and then a list of the streets recommended and the
cost of i~roving each.
With this information in the hands of each Councilman and time allotted for consideration
of the same, it should not be a difficult matter ~at a subsequent meeting, to adopt the program
recommended by the Committee or amend the same in an intelligent manner to the best interest of
the City.
