Common Council--Board of Aldermen. <br /> Gentlemen:~- Your Wmter & Sewer- <br />age Commmtt~e respectfully reports herein concerning the following m~tters referred to the <br />Joint Water & Sewerage Committee December 14, !~15: <br /> <br />Referred by Common Council December l~th. <br /> <br /> A request of the Portsmouth H,uma~ue Society for permission to ereotin the centre of Ef- <br />fingham street, between High and Queen streets, or between London a~.d Glasgow streets of said <br />street, an ornamental drifting fountain; without cost to the City. <br /> It is recommended that said d~inking fountain be put in the parking on Effingham <br />street, on the north side and near to High street; the erection to be under the supervision <br />of the City. Privett, Vice-Chairman. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:-- Your Ferries <br /> <br />& Public Docks Committee respe0tfully reports herein concerning the following matters referred <br />to the Joint Ferries & Public Docks Committee January 1,-lEth, 1916: <br /> <br />Referred by Common Council January l%th. <br /> <br /> A communication from the <br />ers for use of the ferries. <br /> Progress as to ss~e. <br /> <br />Counsel for The Ferries <br /> <br />Co. desiring to purchase ~wo ~ <br /> ~rry steam- <br /> <br />Referred by Board of Aldermen J~uua~y 18th. <br /> <br /> A communication from the B. E. A.~in regard to the Government m~intaining a free ferry <br />service between the Navy Yard s~ud the ~ity of Norfolk for the benefit of employees of the <br />Yard wh~ live in that City. <br /> ~e have examined this communication, believe the protest of the B. Baldwin, ) <br /> <br /> Mr. V~right ~(Grover"~C~), Chairman of the Committee~ offered the following substitute <br />for the m~jority report concerning communication from the B. M. A. in regmrd to the Government <br />maintaining a free ferry service between the Navy Yard aud Nor~otk: "I have examined this com- <br />mttuic~tion and feel that the Council would be doing ~n injustice should it ta~ke any action ~that <br />would result in depriving the Navy Yard employees of something that is of so much benefit to <br />them, I recommend, therefore, that it be not endorsed." <br /> <br />Er. Pile moved that the report be s~lopted, with the substitute offered by Mr. Wright. <br /> The matter was discussed by Messrs. Pile, Langhorne, and Markham, pro and con. <br /> Then the motion by Mr. Pile was adopted by a vote of y to 2. <br /> <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS. <br /> <br /> First. Matters adopted by the Board of Aldermen January 18th ~nd referred to the Common <br />Council for oonct~rence. <br /> <br /> To appoint a Committee of Three, two from the Common Cotuucil a~d one from the Board of <br />Aldermen, to look ~fter ~A Bill to Protect the Public Health, to Provide for the Control and <br />Supervision of Waters Furnished to the Public fo~ Domestic Use, &c.," or s~uy other bill in <br />which the City may be interested during the session of the Legislature. <br /> Concurred in. <br /> <br /> Second. Matters s~topted by the Common Council Fe*C~us~ry 8th and referred to the Board of <br />Aldermen for conc~vrenos. <br /> <br /> To a~lopt a ~esolution looking to a petition to the General Assembly of Virgini~ for an <br />amendment to the Cha~ter of the City of Portsmouth for authorizing said City to accept a new <br />contract with the Portsmouth, Bsrkley & Suffolk Water Company, should it be deemed desir~ole <br />by the City. <br /> Concurred in February 12th. <br /> <br /> <br />
