<br /> First. Matters adopted by the Board of Aldermen April 18th and referred To the Common
<br />Council for concurrence.

<br /> To lay ~n 8-inch main, instes~i of 4-inch main, on the corner of T~ird and Wythe streets,
<br />under the supervision of the City Engineer.
<br /> Not concurred in, but referred to the ~ater & Sewerage Committee.
<br />
<br /> To refer to Public Property & Schools Committee, with power to act, an approprimtion of
<br />$35. to lay a ie~d pipe on~as~i~g~on ~treet from the Old Jail Lot.
<br /> Amendea by allowing $34. additional for a pipe, making $69. for the two pipes~
<br />
<br /> The Board of Aldermen April lSth concurred in all recommendation~ of Committees adopt-
<br />ed by the Common Council April lith, except recommendation of the Finance Committee with regs~rd
<br />to the License Tax Bill for the Year 1916-17, the Board adopting~only the sections of same
<br />lating to liquor licenses~
<br /> At this point, kbr. Browne moved to conou~ with the Common Council in its action
<br />with regard to the License Tax Bill~
<br /> Er. Privett moved to amend by striking out the tax of $5. on automobiles.
<br /> Er. Privett's amendJ~ent was lost.
<br /> Then?~, Bro~e's motion w~s adopted by the following vote:

<br /> The Board concurred with the Common Council in recommittimg to the Fire Committee the
<br />matter of purchasing 2500 feet of fire hose for the Fire Deps~rtment.
<br />
<br /> The Common Council April llth s~iopted the recommendation, of the majority of the Fire
<br />Committee to purchase the LaFranoe Tripple Combination Pumping Engine, &c., for $9,000.00; the
<br />Bo~rd adopted neither.the majority nor the minority report as to engine. '
<br />
<br /> Second. Matters adopted by the Common Council May ~th and referred to the Board of Alder-
<br />men for concurrence.
<br />
<br /> To refer to Light Committee, with power to act, a petition of the Portsmouth Humane Society
<br />for a light on the public drinking fountain located at High and Effingham streets.
<br />
<br /> To instruct the Fire Committee to turn over to the Humane Society or to someone else who
<br />would care for same without working him~ a horse formerly used by one of the fire companies.
<br />
<br /> To mtlow an additional appropriation of $75. for another band of music fo~ the firemen's
<br />pmrade in May.
<br />
<br /> To refer to Street Committee putting in low places in Oak Grove Cemetery'dirt to be taken
<br />from Cooke street, when paved.
<br />
<br /> To refer to Police Committee, with power to act, to provide an awning and stand for pro-
<br />tection of the Traffic Officer at the corner of Court.and High streets.

<br /> The Mayor returned his ~ppEoval'.of the f~ellowing matters addpted by the two branches of

<br /> To make available, as needed by the Street Committee, funds for paving streets heretofore
<br />adopted in the "Street Paying Program."
<br /> ~ppropriation of $800.00, out of Seventh Ward Bond Account, to tile on each side South
<br />street Road, between Pine and Pearl, in order tooarry off the ~r~ter from it, and to resurface
<br />
<br />An appropriation of $25,000. for sites for the new High School and colored School buildings.
<br />To pay Police bills held up by the Auditor in March on account of lack of appropriation or
<br />because they exceeded 1/12 of appropriation~llowed for same, to amount of $210.39~ out of
<br />propriation as available, 1/12 monthly.
<br /> To make available as needed $500. allowed in the Budget for the "Playground."
<br /> To make available the $240. s~llowed in the Budget~for "Quar~utine Commissioners."
<br /> To gra~t permission to The Chesapeake & Potomac T~lephone Co. to erect a~d replace poles
<br />on Naval avenue, H~tton street, Riverview avenue, and Park avenue, as s~ownby copyof drawing
<br />attached to petition; the work to be done under the supervision of.the City Engineer.
<br /> To grant permission ~o The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. to e~eot two poles on Pine
<br />street, between Nelson and Fayette, as shown by copy of d~awing attached to peti~io , the work
<br />to be done under the supervision of the City Engineer.
<br /> To grant a~proposition of the Right of Way Agent of The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co.
<br />to improve the telephone delivery construction ~long Highstreet, between Eiddte smd Cou~t; a~d
<br />on South street, between Middle~knd Cra~ord; in accordance wit~ blueprint attached to prop~~
<br />sition; provided the work be done under the supervision of th~ City Engineer, and with the ~r-
<br />ther proviso thmt they put.in and reserve a conduit for the City for the extension of it~ Fire
<br />Alarm a~! Police Telegraph System.
<br /> Award made to the C. E~ Du~navant Construction Co~ to pave Ar~ street, between Owens and
<br />A~mstrong (south side), ~ $1.t2 per sq.
<br />Award m~e to Littleford Bros., Cincinnati, Ohio, for a Portable Tar and Asphalt Heater
