96 It is recommended that the petition be granted, the work to be done under the super- vision of the City Engineer, and with the proviso that a conduit~e reserved in same for use of the City. Referred by Board of Aldermen April 18th. A request of th~ Sixth Ward Board that some definite action be taken to mbate the flooding of Second avenue and Columbia street, in the Sixth and Seventh Wards, by rain fall and wash water from the two ice pls~uts nearby. It is recommended that this matter be sent to the Seventh Ward Board, requesting them to look into the same and make provision for their proportion of the expense for abating the flooding of said streets. The filling up of Gander Creek with mud by the S. A. L. Railway Co. We report that this corxlition ha~ been remedied. In connection with Street Paving, it is further recommended that the Virginia Rail- way & Power Co. be permitted to use a 70 lb. T rail with "nose brick" next to the rail on the inside for a finish, on Washington, Cooke, and Efflngham streets, on account of said Company's inability to get Girder rails; and in this connections it is further recommended that the Con- tractor be permitted to use the fire hydrants for the purpose of getting water with which to run his mixer in connection with putting down the concrete. Firming it necessary to purchase a new Sweeper, we request that we be permitted to use the $200. for "Repairs to Sweeper" a~_d $125. out of "Repairs to B=ooms" in the Budget of 1916. (Signed) S. Gentlemen:-- Your Pub- lic Property & Schools Committee respectfully reports herein concerning the following matters referred to the Joint Public Property & Schools Committee April 18th and February 15th, 1916: Referred by Board of Aldermen April 18th~ To oo~fer with Dr. Jos. Grioe and owners of the Central Market as to what said Market can be bought for, to be used as a Public Market~ We have taken this matter up with Dr. Griee and s.fter a thozough examination of same, it is recommended that the Market be purchased at a cost of $60,000.00~ In connection with this reoommeralation, we submit herewith the following statement: Statement with Regard to PnrOhmsing the Central ~arket~ Corner of High & Chestnut Streets, as a Public Market. We have furthe~ considered this matter with the Superintendent of the Public SchooSs and members of the School~BOard, and submit herewith the following joint report of the School Board and Public Property & Schools Committee: "1. That in regard to the site for the new high school building~ the block of ground bounded by High St., Fourth Ave., Queen St., and Third Ave- nue has been selected for the same, a~d that options have been secured upon all this property, the purchase price to be $19,500.00. 2o That the site selected for the colored school is the block of ground bounded on three sides by Cliffo=d St., Chestnut St. .~a~.i. Bart St. (extended), and that negotiations are now going forward for the acquisition o~ th~s property by purchase at a fair price; failing in which, condemnation proceedings will be instituted.
