<br /> Advisability of one more paid man in each engine house.

<br /> An ~opropriatlon to place a fire plug at the corner of North street and Tenth avenue out
<br /> of Sixth Ward funds. ,
<br /> It is recommended thmt an appropriation be allowed tO place a fire plug at said corner,
<br /> out of Sixth Wa~d funds.
<br /> Y~ Deps~tment urges that this recommendation be adopted, as, upon personal investi-
<br /> gation, we find that there are nine houses unprotected from fire and should a fire occur, there
<br /> is no possible way for them to be reached. Therefore, we feel the necessity of recommending
<br /> the placing of a plug at ~his particular corner.
<br />
<br /> Notices from the various fire companies of the election of paid men for the ensuing year.
<br /> It is recommended that the election of paid men of the following fire companies be
<br /> confirmed for the ensuing year: Chmmbers, Independent, Park Yiew, Annex and Union.
<br />
<br /> A petition of Frank Ziskind and others for a light at the corner of Eighth and Jefferson
<br /> streets.
<br /> It is recommended that said petition be granted. Upon investigation, we find that
<br />this location is in a very thiokl¥~populated negro settlement, is very dark, and we feel that,
<br />for public safety, a light should be installed at this particular corner.

<br /> An~ it is further recommended that the Council create the office of electrical in-
<br />~pector and that the matter be referred to the Ordinance Committee to drs~ft suitable ordins~uces
<br />defining the duties of said Officer. And in this connection,~ it is recommended that the De-
<br />par~memt of Law request the Chairman and Vice-Chairm~n of the Dep~rtment of Public Safety to
<br />meet with them for the purpose of defining certain changes in the Department which will pertain
<br />to this office.

<br /> On motion, the report of the Department was adopted, the recommendation that one more
<br />paid ms~u be put in each engine house being referred to the Finance Committee to consider
<br />the Budget of 1917; the recommend&rich to place a fire plug mt the corner of North street and
<br />Tenth avmnue, to Finance DepartMent; the recommendation to install a light at the corner of
<br />Eighth and Jefferson streets, to Finance Department;~andthe recommendation that the office
<br />of Electrical Inspector be crea~ed, to Finance Department to consider fo~ the Budget of 1917.

<br /> A petition of the Board of Health that the Council provide a suitable
<br />site and sufficient funds to construct a Detention House, in accordance With plans submitted
<br />therefor.
<br /> Progress as to same.

<br /> A petition of the Seventh Ward Board for an ~ppropriation of $75. to cut down weeds in
<br />the Seventh Ward. ~
<br /> It is recommended that this petition be granted, the appropriation to come from
<br />Seventh Ward funds.
<br />
<br /> To take up the mat~er of cows which .have been sold as unfit for milking~being brought
<br />into the City to be sold again to the public as first-class beef.

<br /> To report as soon as practicable as to an offer from Dr. Guthrie'to sell his property
<br />~djoining the Oak Grove Cemetery, for $4,000.00.
<br /> It is recommended that $~.00 per foot be offered Dr. Guthrie for 600 or more feet
<br />of hi~ property adjoining Oak Grove Cemetery.
<br />
<br /> It is further recommended that $5©. be appropriated for cleaning the public walks
<br />of the Oak Grove Cemetery.

<br /> On motion, the report of the De~artmm~t was adopted, the several recommended ap-
<br />propriations being referred to the Finance Department.

<br /> Finance-- Reports of Officers for the month of August, 1916.

<br />Fins~ucial condition of the various Departments of the City for the month of August, 1916.
<br /> We report that no action is necessmry on same.
<br />
<br /> A report of the ~uditor of the following bills held up by him, because of lack of appro-
<br />priation or beoause~the~ exceeded 1/12 of appropriation for same: General Administration.

<br /> Almshguse~ $~2.60; Board of Health, $7.00; Cemeteries, $~g. O0; Fire, $56.43; Police,
<br />$19.D0; Streets, $988.25.
<br /> It is recommended that special appropriations be mad~ to pay the follow~ng of said
<br />bills: General Administration, $63.60~ Beaird of Health, $7.00, Cemeteries, $8.00~ Fire, $56.43;
<br />Almshouse, $52.60.
<br /> We report t~at no ~pD~opriation is needed for Police bills.
<br /> And it is recommended that Street ~il2s to amount of $~6.25 be paid, out of the
<br />regul~ appropriation for sams.
<br />
<br /> A petition cf the Chief of Police for an appropriation of $7.5o for ~ "detail book;" $1~.00
<br />for ~ record book for City fines, &o.; and $3.O0 for stub pads.
<br /> It is recommended that said appropriations be allowed.
<br />
<br /> A request of the City Tre&surer to borrow $20,000. for Current Expenses and $10,000. for
<br />School Expenses, for October, ~916.
