No, gan, Chairman. <br /> <br /> The report having been read, the Cha_rm~n of the Department of Finance w~hem to know <br /> will <br />if Public Service Department has to its credit money to pay the bill of F~ J~ EcGuire a~d <br />not come back on his Department for more funds for same. <br /> Mr. Morgan replied that there is money available to pay the bill, after deducting the <br />price of the steam roller sold Er. ~c~ire for ~ <br /> Then on motion, the report of the Department was adopted, the recommended appropria- <br />tion to pay ~. J. ~c&aire for work done on Effingham and Queen streets being referred to P~nance <br />Department, and by the following vote: <br /> Ayes--Bunting, Das~ieli,. Hanvey, Herbert <br /> ~orris, Eot gan, <br /> <br /> Public Safety-- <br /> Referred ~anuary 23rd. <br /> <br /> Advisability of placing a light on the Cat Bole Bridge. <br /> It is recommended that a light be so placed. <br /> <br /> Advisability of a light on Griffin street, between Chestnut and Pine; and one on CllffQrd <br />and Chestnut. <br /> It is recommended, that lights be'placed at these locations° <br /> It is further recommended that a li~at be placed mm the west end of Caroline street. <br /> (Signed) Oscie Dashiell~ Chai~man~ <br /> <br /> On motion, the appropriations needed for the recommended lights were referred zo the <br />Department of Finance. <br /> The Chairman of the ~Department of Public Safety read proposals for mo~torizing the Fire <br />Department. Er. ~orris moved that the proposal of the American LaFrance Fire Engine Company <br />be accepted, at prices specified, provided that the discount of ~% c~n be obtained. <br /> The~Chairman of the Department of Finance stated that he favored the pUrchase of the <br />apparatus. ~t~. Bunting said he favored the purchasing of one set yearly and using the ol~ma~ <br />teri~.l or such part ~ can be used with the new apparatus° <br /> Finally, ~Lr. Eorrismoved to sena ba&~ to the Department of Public safety with the <br /> ~ity ~anager, to consider the m~tter further a~d report oack to Council as to now zt c~n be <br /> financed and as to legality of giving as guarantee for payments a deed of trust onthe appara- <br /> tus° The amendment w'~s adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herbert wished to know if ~niie waiting for a report of the Department, all certified <br />checks given with bids on fire apparatus should not be returned. <br /> Whereupon, Nm. Norris moved that all of said checks, except that of the American LaFrance <br />Fire Engine Company, be returned, and that this check be held until it is found out whether <br /> satisfactory terms can not be arr~n~d with said Company, The motion ~as adopted~ <br /> <br />Public Welfare-- <br /> Reported ~Progress" on matters referr~d~to said Department. <br /> <br /> Finance-- <br /> Referred February 13th. <br /> <br /> A petition of the Norfolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to have made <br />available the appropriation of $250. allowed in the Budget for said Society. <br /> It is recommended that said amount be made available. <br /> <br /> A petition of the School Board for an ~ppropriation of $i~010. to ~y proposed increases <br />in salaries of the teachers a~d principals of Schools for September, October~ No~em~oer, and <br />December, 1917. (~ith the express wish of the Council to have the appropriation ~reeommended, <br />if it can be done)~ <br /> Progress as to same. <br /> <br /> Jane Davis to be refunded $1.80, pai~ i~ error for roll ~ax on No. 30q <br /> A petition of Mary <br />Chestnut street, year l~l~; and to be relieved from payment cz $1.80 for sozl tax on No. 30~ <br />Chestnut street, year 1915; Sixth Ward. <br /> It is recommended that the said petition be granted, the funds to be paid out of Sixth <br />~ard funds~ <br /> Bills of R. C. Barclay, E. P. Claud, and Louis J. Norris, to amount of $60. each, as mem- <br />bers of the Local Board of Review for the year 1916; and a bill of Ebenezer Thompson to amount <br />of $30.O0~as one-half of bill for services as Clerk of the Local Board of Review for thirty days. <br /> It'is recommended that said bills be paid. <br /> <br /> A communication from the City Collector, accompanied by a communicatio~ from the Division <br /> Counsel of the Southern Railway Company, concerning a penalty paid by said Company for failure <br /> to pay taxes on time, <br /> We report that we have looked into this matter, find no reason why the amount should <br /> be refunded~ and,therefore, recommend that same be not refunded. <br /> A report of the Local Board of Review of corrections on the Land Book of the Assessors. <br /> It is recommended that the Auditor be instructed ~o check up said corrections and <br /> credit the City Collector with amounts lowered and charge with amounts raised; and also report <br /> to the Council thc names and amounts which should be refunded pmrtiee. <br /> A request of the Cit~ Treasurer to borrow $20,000. for Cttrrent Expenses a~d $10,000. for <br /> <br /> <br />
