<br /> We report that this matter has been attended to,

<br /> That some action be taken as to extending Hatton street, from London street to High.
<br /> We report that this matter is out of the hands of the Department Of Public Service
<br />and-in the hands of the Council. On December 14th, this Department made the following recommen-
<br />d~tio~ to the Council: "It is recommended that we offer Mr. Alexander $15,000, for this proper-
<br />ty and give him the City's note for same."
<br />
<br /> Suggestion of the City Mmna~er that, after the City's needs are supplied by dumping ashes,
<br />street sweepings, trash, &c.; on public propsrty, this material be dumped on private property;
<br />provided the owner file a petition for the material ~nd pay a reasonable charge for it; all
<br />money so collected to be deposited in the street repair account.
<br /> We approve of this suggestion o~ the Manager.

<br /> A recommendation of the City Manager that the City acquire a road machine and a steam ro!l-
<br />
<br /> ~e approve of this recommendation, provided the additional funds can ~e secured for
<br /> purchasing same.
<br />
<br /> That Water etreet, j~etween Queen and London, be repaved and improved.
<br /> The City Manager u~ng the lmying of a block pavement from the northerly end of the pave-
<br /> ment on Water street ~o the easterly end of the pavement on North street, so as to provide a
<br /> passable roadway for traffic to and from the steamboat la~ding at the foot of North street.
<br /> We would recommend the p~ving of Water street or such part of it as has nos
<br /> been paved, the entire length, with Belgian Block, a~ud the widening of t?~s street from London
<br /> to North, at m~u ~a~ly date, as the finances of the City will permit. The approximate cost of

<br /> City Manager urges that the proper steps be tmken in connection with the City of Norfolk
<br />acquiring certain water sh~d~ which are lo Eical sources of supply for the City of Portsmouth.
<br /> It is recommended that a committee be appointed to investigate this matter at a very
<br />early date, said committee ~o be composed of three members of the Council, the City Manager,
<br />and the City Attorney.

<br /> The ~eport having been read, the matter of planting grass and perennial shrubs or bushes
<br />in the parkway on Washington stre.et wms objected to by Er. Morg~n. He stated that he did not
<br />approve of the recommendation of the City M~nager because it is too late in the season to plant
<br />trees and shrubs, but that he proposes to have street sweepings put in the parkway about April
<br />let.
<br /> Then ~,[r. Morgan moved to amend, that the City Manager be authorized to put street sweep-
<br />ings in the ~arkway on said street. -The amendment ~s a~opted.
<br />
<br /> The City Manager stated that he had.been loaned the use of a steam roller by a contractor,
<br />provided ~he City supplied m competent man to run the roller; and further, that he had purchased
<br />for $1~2.OO, a road machine, out of Street Repair Funds.
<br /> On motion, the action of the Manager in purchasing the ro~d machine was approved.
<br />
<br /> Then on motion, the report of the Department was adopted, as amended, the recommend-
<br />appropriation to pave Water street, &c., being referred to the Finance Department.
<br />
<br /> Public Property--
<br /> The Chairman stated that he had no written repor~ to ma~e, but that
<br />he had made arrangements to house the horses of Grime~ Battery at $~0. per month and is having
<br />.plans drawn for stables for the horses.
