<br /> KNO~ ALL MEN BY T~SE PRESENTS: That the City of Portsmouth, Norfolk
<br />acknowledges i~self to owe and for value received hereby p~omisee to pay to bearer, upon the
<br />first day of April, l~__~ the sum of ONE THOUSA~D DOLLARS in gold coin of the present standard
<br />of weight and fineness, with interest thereon in like gold coin at the ~ate of four (~) percent
<br />per mmnum, payable semi-annually upon th~ first days of April and October of each year, until
<br />the payment of the principal hereof, upon presentation and surrender of the proper coupons there-
<br />for hereto attached. Both principal and interest hereof are payable at
<br />Bank in the City Of Portsmouth, Virginia.

<br /> This bond is one of ~ serie~ of thirty-two bonds of like denomination, tenor and effect,
<br />except as to maturity, numbered consecutively from one to th'~rty-two, both inclusive, aggregat-
<br />ing $32,000 in ~mount, ~ is issued under authority of the Genera& Laws of the State of Vir-
<br />ginia, particularly Section 32a of the Charter of the City of Portsmouth, and by virtue of au
<br />ordinance duly passed by the Council of 9aid~ City Upon the 6th d~y of March, 1~1~, entitled,
<br />'~ ordinance to authorize the issue of ~32,000.00 of bonds to be known as 'Portsmouth, Virginia,
<br />Fire apparatus bor~ls, pursuant to section 32a of the Charter of the City of Port~mouth, for the
<br />purpose of purchasing fire engine and other necessary fire appara.~us, and erect~n=' ~ a building
<br />for and equipping a fire department.'

<br /> It is hereby certified and recited that all acts, conditions and things required by law
<br />to be done, precedent to a~d in the iss~uanee hereof, in order to make this bond a legal, valid
<br />and binding obliEation of the City of Portsmouth, No~folk County, Virginia, have'been done, have
<br />happened and ~een performed in ~eg~lar and due forms that this issue of bonds, together with
<br />other OUtsta~uding indebtedness of said City, is not in excess of any statutory or constitutional
<br />limitation of indebtedness$ that provision h~s been mad~ for the levy and collection of an an-
<br />nual tax sufficient to pay the interest hereof and to create a sinking fund tO redeem the prin-
<br />cipal at maturity$ that the full faith, credit and revenues amd all the real and personal pro-
<br />perty of said City, are hereby irrevocably pledged for the prompt payment o~ this bond mud
<br />retest, as the same m~ture.

<br /> IN W~TNES8 WHEREOF, the C~u~cil of the City of. Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia,
<br />has caused this bond to be sigued by the President of the City Council and countersigned by the
<br />City Treasurer; the seal of the'City to be affixed, atteste~ by the City Clerk, ~nd the coupons
<br />to bear the fac-simile signature of the City Treasurer at Portsmouth, Virginim, this first day
<br />of April, 1917.

<br />mouth, Virginia, the sum of $ being sixmonths interest then due on its Fire
<br />Apparatus Bond, numbered dated April 1, 1~17,

<br />"SECTION ll: BE IT FURTPLER ORDAINED, that there shall be and is hereby levied upon all
<br />the tax~ble property in ~he City of Portsmouth~ Virginia, a direct ~nnual tax sufficient in a-
<br />mount to pay the interest on said bonds as it becomes due, and to provide a einkin~ fund to
<br />redeem the principal'thersof at maturity; the rate and amount of said tax shall be-annually
<br />computed aUd s~me shall be ~evied m~ud collected as other taxes are levied and collected, and
<br />the proceeds sh~ll be used fO~ no other purpose than pay the'interest on said bonds a~d create
<br />a sinking' fund i6 redeem the principal thereof at maturity.
