Robertson to be refunded $5.40, paid in error for soil tax, yea~s <br />1914 15 16; Seventh Ward. <br /> Progress as to same. <br /> <br /> A notice from ~he President of the League of Virginia Municipalities <br />will meet in Lynchburg September 18-19-20th, 1917, <br /> <br /> (With City Eanage= and CommiSsioner of the Revenue) NOtice from the State Corporation <br />Commission thmt it will sit in their Court Room in Richmond on certain dates for purpose of <br />ascertaining and assessing values of the properties of public service corporations for the <br />current year~ <br /> We report that said instructions will be followed out. <br /> <br /> A bill of the Clerk of Court to a_~ount of $5~.18, for copying and certifying list of <br />persons who have paid their poll taxes. <br /> Progress. <br /> <br /> A petition of Miss Edna E. Banting, Vice-Chairma~ <br /> <br />On motion, the report of the Department was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> Ayes-- Bunting, Claud, Dashiell, Hanvey, Herbert, Morris, 6. <br /> <br /> (Mr. Morris voting No on the recommendation authorizing the City Manager <br />to purchase an automobile at his own personal expense, the up keep of same ~ot to exceed $25. <br />per month to be borne by the City). <br /> <br />The following communications were re~i from the City Manager: <br /> <br /> Recommending that an ordinance be pas~ed requiring all of the City Offices to be kept <br />open from 8:30 a~ m. until 5:30 p. m., including dinner hour, where there are two or more <br />employees in an office. <br /> On motion, said recommendation was referred to the Law Department. <br /> <br /> Recommending that ~he request of the Labor Day Committee to have the Police and F~re <br />Departments participate in the parade on Monday, September 3~1, be allowed. <br /> The Manager was authorized to use his own discretion as to allowing the request. <br /> <br /> Enclosing a letter from the President of the City Managers' Association, in regard <br />to the annual meeting of the Assoolatmon which is to be held in Detroit, Mich., November l~, <br />1917. <br /> On motion, the communication was referred to the Finance Department. <br /> <br /> Recommending that Hatton street be opened from London to High and requesting that he <br />be given the authority to collect, comp~ie and submit data~to?theC~uncil~at ~it~ ne~t~r~g~lar <br />meeting for definite action, should his findings meet'with the Council's approval. <br /> ~o action was t~ken on the said recommendation. <br /> <br /> Report of his vis~t~to Washington, in company with City Attorney Jno. W. Happer, Mees~s. <br />C. H. Herbert and ~. P. Claud, protesting against the enla~gment of the cemetery now located <br />on the Naval Hospital grounds so as not to interfere with the property values on Park avenue; <br />but no action.was necessary on same. <br /> <br /> Recommendingthat the payment of $20,000.00, which was authorized at the last meeting <br />of the Council, be nc~ paid the American La~rance Fire Engine Co., as the payment would be <br />in violation of the contract between said Companyand the City. <br /> Whereupon, the Chairman of the Department of Finance moved that the payment of ca,id <br />amount be held up until his Department reports that all the fire apparatus ordered by the <br />City has been received and accepted by the City. <br /> The Manager theu~t~ the American LaFrance Fire Engine Co. should be notified by the <br />City Attorney as to why the payment of the money is being held.up. <br /> Finally, the matter was ~ned over to the City Manager to deal directly with said <br />Company. <br /> <br /> At this pcint~ the rules were suspended to hear from a delegation of ladies who were <br />present. <br /> Mrs° J. T. Bensten spoke for the delegation and r~quested that the City Council <br />authorize the p~rchase of iron benches to be placed on the old Jail lot at the corner of High <br />& Washington streets~ but no action was taken on the request. <br /> <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS° <br /> <br /> Reports of sundry Officers for mhe month of July, 1917, were presented and were ordered <br />to take the usual c~urse. <br /> <br /> <br />
