<br /> Ths. tmx hereby imposed shall be in lieu of all tax upon capit~l actually employed bp
<br />said merchant or mercantile firm on said business, and shall be paid when the license isissued.
<br />
<br /> Every merchant, firm or corporation applying for a license shall be required to produce
<br />a bona fide rent receipt, agreement or check, showing the mmount of rent paid per ~onth or
<br />year by him or them; and, if in the judgment of the Commissioner of the Revenue, he or they
<br />sme, seeking to evade the ta~ by not producing the proper receipt, ,then the said Commissioner.
<br />shall refuse to grant him or them the required license until he shall have investigated the
<br />application therefor in order to ascertain the true amount of rental paid by said applicant.
<br />
<br /> If ~he merchant,, firm or corporation applying for m license own~the place of business,
<br />and, in the judgment o~ the Oommissione~ of the Revenue, he or they dO not pu~ a proper rent-
<br />al ~alue cE the property, the said'Commzssioner shall hm~e authority, to i~ves~ig~te and
<br />certain the true ~ental value of such property before g~anting the application.

<br /> 40. MERCHANTS-(WHOLESALE)
<br />
<br /> ALL ~ERCHANTS WHO DO NOT SELL TO THE CONSUMER SHALL BE DEEMED TO BE WHOLESALE MERCHANTS.

<br /> The rmne of w.holesale merchants shall be $5~.00 minimum (allowing $50,000, purchases) ~
<br />and ten cents on each ~lOO.~ of purchases above $50,000.00 to $400, O00.OO. On mll purchases
<br />above $400,OOO. OO, the ra~e shall be five cents on each $1OO. of purchases.

<br />line or other illuminating oils by wholesale, or both wholesale and retail, $151.00 on each
<br />wagon or cart so used.

<br /> Any person, firm or corporation who shall engage in the sale of edible oils, kerosene,
<br />gasoline or a%her illuminating oils from wagons or carts, by retail only, $51.OO on each Wagon
<br />or dart so used.
<br />
<br />Each gasoline ~tmnk, $11.OO, in addition to any other tax imposed by this Ordinance.

<br />%3. OYSTERS AND FISH
<br />
<br /> Each person, firm or corporation who shall engage in the b~siness of packing oysters and
<br />crabs or fish, or mi1 three kinds, $151.00. Packing crabs only, $26.OO.
<br />
<br />PEDDLERS
<br />
<br /> Peddlers of market produce, fresh meats or fish, and venders of frults, nuts, confection-
<br />eries, tea, coffee, sold on the streets or in other public pla~es, $~6.OO for each tray, bas-
<br />ket, ca~t, dray, wagon, wheelbarrow, pushcart or other vehicle used in addition to the regular
<br />tax on wagons.
<br />
<br /> It shall be unlmwful for any person, except agents far manufacturers, zo use any wagons
<br />or other vehicles for.the purpose of pe~diinE, within, the limits of th~ City of Portsmouth,
<br />without having first registered with the Chief of Police his name and place of ~esidence,
<br />and the nature a~d dat,-and tenure of h~s licens~ to do business within the said City. And
<br />there shall be at all.times provided and kept at Police headquarters by the Chief of Police
<br />a permanent record of such registration, showing the name, date and serial number of said li-
<br />cense, and the said record shall be open to ~ablic inspection.
