June 11,2002 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, public recognition of the generosity of such individuals or entities <br />often serves both to express gratitude to the donors and to encourage potential <br />donations; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the naming of galleries and other parts of a museum in a donor's <br />honor or in accordance with a donor's wishes often serves as an expression of gratitude <br />and as an incentive for future gifts; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth desires to authorize the <br />recognition of benefactors of the Portsmouth Museums. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby authorizes the City Manager from time to time to <br />grant permission to the Portsmouth Museums Foundation to place plaques honoring <br />donors at various locations in the Portsmouth Museums. The City Manager shall inform <br />the City Council in writing of any proposed placement of plaques. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she hereby is, directed <br />to send a copy of this resolution to the Chairperson of the Portsmouth Museums and <br />Fine Arts Commission." <br /> <br />Ayes: Griffin, Moody, Pitts, Robinett, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />02 - 176 - Adoption of a resolution approving and adopting mission statements for the <br />Portsmouth Museums and for the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse <br />Galleries, The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and The Lighthouse Museum. <br /> <br />This action will allow the museums to seek accreditation and will support the <br />actions and activities of the museums. <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />· Adoption of a resolution approving and adopting mission statements for the <br />Portsmouth Museums and for the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse <br />Galleries, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Lightship Museum. <br /> <br />Purpose and Need: <br /> <br />· All museums seeking accreditation are required to have a formally stated mission <br />statement. A mission statement describes the purpose of a museum and its reason for <br />existence. It defines the museum's unique identity and purpose, and provides a distinct <br />focus for the institution. A mission statement articulates the museum's understanding of <br />its role and responsibility to the public and its collections, and reflects the environment <br />in which it exists. <br /> <br />· Every action and activity of the museum should support the purpose set forth in the <br />mission statement. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br /> <br />· There is no financial impact. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Mr. Pitts, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION APPROVING AND ADOPTING MISSION STATEMENTS FOR THE <br />PORTSMOUTH MUSEUMS AND FOR THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA, <br />THE COURTHOUSE GALLERIES, THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD <br />MUSEUM, AND THE LIGHTSHIP MUSEUM. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, all museums seeking accreditation are required to adopt a formally <br />stated mission statement; and <br /> <br /> <br />
