<br /> WHEREAS, a museum's mission statement should describe the museum's
<br />purpose and its reason for existence; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, a museum's mission statement should also define the museum's
<br />unique identity, provide a distinct focus for the institution, and articulate the museum's
<br />understanding of its role and responsibility to the public and its collections; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission has developed
<br />a propose general mission statement for the Portsmouth Museums and individual
<br />mission statements for the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse Galleries, the
<br />Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Lightship Museum.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, has reviewed the
<br />proposed mission statements and desires to adopt them as a formal statement of the
<br />purpose and goals of each institution.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of
<br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby adopts the mission statements for the Portsmouth
<br />Museums, the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse Galleries, the Portsmouth
<br />Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Lightship Museum, set out in a document titled
<br />"Proposed Mission Statements for Museums," attached hereto and made a part hereof.
<br />
<br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she hereby is, directed
<br />to send a copy of this resolution to the Chairperson of the Portsmouth Museums and
<br />Fine Arts Commission."
