October 11, 1923 <br /> <br />Esteemed Sir:-- <br /> <br /> Our representative reports the pessibilit? of placing in your city a fleet <br />of taxicabs providing certain locations can be secured amoung which is the position in front <br />of the monument at High and Court streetS. <br /> <br /> You undoubtly appreciate the advertising that is attached to a well regulated <br />Taxicab service, especially over the old FOr Hire Car System and mainly for that reasonwe f~el <br />that this m~tter will be given your every at~ention. <br /> <br /> Under separate cover we are forwarding ou~ taxicab booklet which shows the <br />c~mss of ca~s desired to be placed in ~ou~ City. <br /> <br /> Kindly advise us if it will be possible to secure these special points of <br />space for these taxicabs and mh~ough what channel we should pursue to secure the same. <br /> <br />Thanking you in advance for your consideration and prompt reply, <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />P~F. Taxi oab Dept." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. White, the communication was referred to the special meeting of Council <br />to be called for studying the proposition to place taxicabs in the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> 2nd. "I am forwarding herewith bill for w~ter furnished the Norfolk County jail since <br />the contract was signed relative to the new ~uilding, The City informally agreed to pay for <br />this water after the signing of the contract. I therefore see no other alternative than to <br />pay it." <br /> On motion, the communication was referred to the Finance Oommtttee. <br /> <br /> 3rd. "I mm transmitting herewith a resolution passed by the Eighth Ward Civic League on <br />Sept. 23rd, 1923, relative to'the division of cost of paving west High St. <br /> <br /> It is recommended that this question be settled as soon as practicable. As it <br />appears to me, onl~ the Cou~ll can determine what this agreement was." <br /> <br />The following is ~he resolutionof the Eighth Namd Civic League: <br /> <br /> ~Resolved: That the Honorable City Counci!'aud City Manager be requested to stand by the <br />original agreement and understanding as to pre-rating the cost of paving High Street fromthe <br />Belt Line west, terms of which were set forth in the City-Manager's recommendations at the time." <br /> <br /> Eighth Nard Civic League, <br />Thcs. "I am' transmitting herewith resolution of the Eighth Ward Civic League~ relative to <br />new railway station at Port Norfolk. If it is possible to get the three railroads into a union <br />station'downtown~ I think this should be done. If this can not be done, it would be very de- <br />sirmble for-the Atlantic Coast Line and the Southern Railroads to provide a new station on the <br />present site. <br /> <br /> In vlew,h~ever, of pending negotiations I would suggest that the Council defer <br />tion on this resolution until the first regular meeting in December at which time unless de- <br />finite developments have taken place in the union depot project, I will recommend that the <br />Council endorse the Eighth Wa~d League proposition." <br /> <br /> The following is the resolution of the Eighth Wa~d Oivlc League: <br />"Portsmouth, Virginia, September ~3rd, 1923. <br />Whereas: Our present railroad station is totally inadequate, out of date, withouZ modern <br />conveniences, not in keeping with the size of this community and City cr the amount of patronage <br />received. <br /> <br /> Resolved: That we request the A.C~L~ R.R. Co. and if necessary the Southern Railway to <br />provide a new up to date station on the spot where the old station now stands, having modern <br />improvements and one that will be a credit to the Railroad Companies and the City of Ports- <br />mouth and that the Oity Manager be requested to work with us in ~his mat~er. <br /> <br />Eighth~Wa~vd Civic L~ague, <br /> <br />Thcs. Ha~per, Pres. <br /> <br />Passed this d~te unanimously by Eighth Ward Civic Lemgue. <br /> <br />On me,ion of Mr. White, the suggestion of the City Manager was concurred in. <br /> <br /> 5th. "I am transmitting herewith an ordinance amending ordinance relative to crowds stand- <br />ing in th~atree and other public b~ildings. The passage of this ordinance is recommended by <br />the Fire Chief as a result of his personal observation in theatres of the City. <br /> <br />Of souses, its passage may be regarded in some ways by owners of theatres, etc. <br /> <br /> <br />
