zo~wamding herewith letter from ~,he ~ortsmouth Chambe_ os Commerce asking
for assistance in printing maps. The cost of one thousand of these maps will b~ $35.00. I
believe that this is a legitimate e~penditure by the City and recen~nend a sDedi~l appropriation
of $35.00 for this purpose."

On motion, the recommendation was referred to the Finance Committee.

6th. "I regre~ to report the death ofL~aurice E. Warren, hoseman in the Fire Department,
which took place en Eay 19th, 192&~

]Ar. Warren served with the American forces in the Spanish-~ericsa War, on the
~exican border and in the ~orld War, always as a member of Grimes Battery, a'time honored or-
ganization of Portsmouth. It may be noted that his services were alv~ays voluntary,
Stho ~It having been decided that the residents of.T~3_xton will bet~xed this year, it
is necessary for the. City to provide lights and hydrants fey the ce~ity, I am recommending
therefore that seven lights and eleven Dvdrants be authorized for Truxton and that special
appropriations covering these, effective ~une 1st, be made. The amount involved will be-apprsxi-
mately~850,O0."

On motion, the reco~3msndation was referred to Finance Coramittee.
9th. "It is reco~nended that the $54,000%'00 available from the recent bond issue and the
$3,000.00 balance from the bond issue for the market be allocated as follows:

Pavements around new market- concrete ....................... $12,910,0d
~est Park View street,s,bituminous macadam,.i~?l~.~ng
Chestnut St'. 18 ft. bitzu~inous macadam, from ~incoln to South ll,VVi~00
Curbing en the south side of Queen St. in rear of High School 300.00

$5~,802.00 '

This schedule absorbs all money available for paving ~ud omits many worthy'pro, sots
like First Ave. from Leckie to High, time smooth paving of ~he west side of Crav, Tord St., the
paving~of Third St. ffrom ~ffythe St. south, and the paving of a short stretch~on Naval Ave. I
'am of the opinion, however, that the most urgent projects have been recommended,

The DwinetI-~$rig/%t Company would prefer the continuation of the paving of Duke
St. from~Chestnut St. to Washington rather than the paving of Chestnut St. This would, however,
cost $13,000;00. The only practicable change which might be made in the above recommendation
~ould'be to emit the paving of'Chestnut St., from Duke St. South to Lincoln St. This ~uld
result in a saving of about $3,000,00 which mi~=ht be applied to the smooth paving of the west
side cf Crawfo~d' St. and ~e paving of the short block of 150 ft. on Naval Ave. between Linden
and WeBster Ave~. This could be done for the present as the necessary right of way on Chestnut
St. sou*~ of Randolph has not yet been sec,3med."

On motion of ~gr. White, the communication was referred to Finance Committee.

10th. "The Kissel car, operated by the Chief of the Fire Department, has reached such a
stage that repairs will cost at least $600.00, and considering the general condition of the
ca~ would be,-in my opinion, unwarranted°

'i am therefore recmmmending an appropriation of not to exceed $2,039.00 to pur-
chase a new car for the Fire Chief~ Prices have, been received for apparently satisfactory
cars yawing from $1,825.00 to $2~059.00. It~is my in~e~tion to present the necessary details
to the Finance Committee in order to determine what type of car should be purchased."~
On motion, the communication ~s referred to Finance Committee.

paving of that street between'ElmAve, and ArmstroSg St. This p~vingwould be very desir~ole,
were funds available therefor, but with the funds at my disposal, it is impossible for me to
rBco~mend for the present further street improvements in the way of paving or sidewalks."
