"I sm in receipt of a request from Mr. Goodrich Hatton, District Counsel for the Seaboard Air Line R&llw~y for a po~stponement of thirty d~ys in order that~ they may give more time for the study of the r&al advantages of safety gates and autom~ti~ gongs s.nd lights at Prentis and Elm AVes. Mr. Hatton points out that Mr. ~ L. Stanley, Vice Pres., of the Seaboard who would normally handle matters of this kind has been constantly engaged in Florida for the past several months in connection with oonst~ction work and unusm~l mat~ers in that State and that there was no intention whatever on the part of the Se~ooa~d to be discourteous to City officials or to delay the Railway's decision. I am of the oolnion th. at this request is a reasonable one ~nd recommend that it be granted." ' Mr. Btewart (R.E.B.) moved that the recommendation of the .Manager be concurred in. UNFINISHED BUSINESS The following ordinance, which had been placed on first reading by Council February 9th, was taken and read: ~ ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE ISSUANCE OF $65,000.00 P~v9%~ING BONDS OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, MAKING PROVISION FOR THE FORM OF SAID BONDS, AND FOR THE PAYMENT THEREOF. On motion of Mr. Smith, the ordinance, was adopted, and by the ~ollowing vote: Ayes-- M~upin, Cast, Smith, Stewart (R.E.B.), White, 5. On motion of Mr. Oast, the following ordinance, which ~d been placed on first reading February 9th, was oonti~aed on the table until the next meeting: An Ordinance Establishing a Safety Zone at the. Northeast Corner of High'and Courts Streets Lu the City of Portsmouth S.nd Prohibiting Parkmng on High Street Ninety Feet E~st from the Buildi~ Line at the Same Corner. On motion of Mr. Smith, the following ordinance, which h~d been placed on first reading February 9th, was contiuued on the table until the next meeting: An Ordinance Prescribing Rates of Fare in the City of Portsmouth of For-Hire Oars ~nd Penalties for Violation Thereof~ NE~ BUSINESS A request w~s read from the Chambers Fire Oompany No. 2 to be granted permission to hold a volunteer fireman's festival beginnir~ the week of April l~th, 1~26, for a period.of six days and nights, location to be at the Washington Street Ball Park, the Company agreeing to abide by all City Ordinances and ~ales laid dewnby {he City Manager and Oity Council if the permission is granted. On motion, the request was referred to the City Man~ger and Finance Committee.
