not get by and it is almost impossible to handle a bus so as to escape any person who should
step out from a parked c~r. If buses were operated on Washington St., to my mind, it would
be essentia/ to prohibit all parking on both sides of this street, whichwould greatly incon-
venience the residents who own cars. Again, the tall flowers inthe parked area, at certain
seasons of the year, would prevent small children from seein~ approaohi, ng traffio~ and children
n~turally run in and out of the roadway. As the intersecting streets are not wide enough to
give proper vision, the chances of collis~.cn with cross traffic are very great. I believe
that bus operation on Washington St. render the circumstances would be very d~ngerous and would
constitute a partic-ular menace to children, which-we should not assume. I have investigated
the policy .of the V. E. P. Company in regard to operating buses cn parked street-s
Washington StT~ in other cities of the S~ate and find there is only one street on which buses
ar~ run aud th&t is Chamberly~e Ave. in P~ichmond, which has much wider roadways than Washington
St. has, and but few residents necessitating the parking of fewer vehicles.

There are one hundred twenty=~ive signat-~ves of ~te residing in the vicinity of Wash-
ington St"z on this petition. The remainder are in Park View. Of the ~bove-mentioned one hun-
dred twenty-five residents, eighty-five reside on the Oradock car line ~nd of the rem~ining
forty, ten are within a block of the Cradock o~m line and no signer is more than two blocks
away from some cs~ line. In regard to the signers living in Park View ~and West Park View,
who attend the Genital Church and do not have' private Gars, t~y could get off either of those
buses at Washington and High Sts. and have only a few blocks to walk. I hardly believe, if bus
service~ were resumed on Washington St. that. these peo~e would'go to the ferry and transfer,
in preI'erence to walking this short distance. The Or~s~ T~ car service, as you well know,
was discontinued in the new system of transportation r
ee~a~l~ pem~tted by your body.

In view of the f&cts ~ presented above, I am of ~he op~Z~i~n that we should not ask the
Virgini~ Electric & ~ower Co'~ to resume operation cf the bus line On Washington St.
