January 10, 1928 <br /> <br /> Mr. Brooks presented the <br />Providing a Penalty Therefor. <br /> <br /> On motion of Nm; White, <br /> <br />following ordinance: <br /> An Ordinance Prohibiting Masquerading and <br /> <br />the ordinance was placed on first reading. <br /> <br />On motion, adjourned. <br /> <br />$10. <br /> <br />January <br /> <br />At a regular me'ting of the 0ity 0oun¢il held January 2~th there were present: <br /> <br />Messrs-- Vernon Brooks, J. O. Dunford, E. W. Maupin, <br /> Arthur Mayo, J. Alden Oast, j. R. Stewart, <br /> L. G. White, ?. <br /> Also the Oity Manager. <br /> <br /> The~ miDut~s of the s~ecial meeting with the Norfolk 0ounty Board of Supervisors January <br />10th, at 10 a. m., and regular meeting January lOth, at 8 p. m,, ~eze ~ead and were ~oproved. <br /> <br /> REPOKT$ OF 00MMITTEE$ <br />Bridge 0ommittee-- <br /> The Bridge Committee, through Mr. Vernon Brooks, Chairman, presented the <br />following Bill without recommendation, and notified the 0ouncil that he was calling a special <br />meeting of the Oouncil for Tuesday, January 31st, at 8 p. m., to consider the same, the said <br />meeting to be open to any oitize~s who may be interested in the said bridge; <br /> <br /> A Bill to crea~e The Elizabeth Rive=~Bridge Authority,.and to define the powers and duties <br />of such Authority. <br /> <br />The following communications were read fr, m the Oi~y N~nag~r2: <br /> <br /> 1st. Submitted report of the fotlb'wimg~lots sold in Oak Grove Cemetery during the month <br />of December, 192~: <br /> <br />December 20th, to Mrs. Elnor G. Borum, No. 726 $.H., Ave. H. <br /> <br /> On motion, the Oity Attorney was instructed to draft a deed for the lot sold and the <br />proper 0ity Officials were authorized to execute s~e. <br /> <br /> 2nd. #I have received check from the Norfolk 0ounty Board of Supervisors, made payable <br />to the 0ity of Portsmouth, for $1105.15; and will receive another check f=em ~he same source <br />in the amount of $25.00, which will complete their ~hare of the cost of inSi~lling the heating <br />plant in the 0curt House building, the Oounty having paid their one-half of flue direct, amount- <br />ing to $215.00. <br /> <br /> As the check is m~de payable to the City of Portsmouth, I request that the amount <br />Of $!!~0.15 be re--.a~.propriated to General Government- Repairs to Buildings, so that the bills <br />~r same can~be pa~d through the proper channel." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Stewart, the communication was laid on the table until the next .... <br />meeting of Council. <br /> <br /> ~rd. "The petit?n of Levi 0. Rooks to be refunded $10.00, paid in error for shoe repair- <br />ing l~0ense has ~e~ ~nvestigatedby me thrgugh License Inspector Mathews reports tc <br />me that the maohmn~'s the same type of machine ~hat refund was recently g: I, <br />therefore, recommend that the sum~of $10.00 be ref~uded to Levi O. Rooks." <br /> <br /> On motion of Dr. Dunford, the recommendation of the Manager was concurred in, and a <br />sp.ap~P.special appropriation Of $10.00 w=s allowed to make the refund. <br /> · ~th. "I have gone thoroughly into the petition of the residents of Washington St..and <br /> vtOmnity relative to bus service, which was referred to me by your body and am making fznal <br /> report. Yon doubtless remember that a similar petition came before you a short while back <br /> and was referred to me. At that time, I reported to you that it was.un.safe for a b~s line <br /> to operate on Washington St. I s~m still of that opinion and am furnmshmng you the ~oltowing <br /> information for your consmd~ratmon. <br /> <br /> I have informationfrom the person who handled all claims of the former Consolidated <br />Bus Company that 65 to ?0% cf the bus accidents occurring during 1923~ ~24 and "25 on Prentis <br />Park Line were on ~ashington St., that two people were killed and eighteen injured on this <br />street:. The roadway is 16 ft. wide from curb to curb. The old buses are ?'8" wide ~ud the <br /> <br /> <br />
