<br />a mechanical sweeper and two trucks for the Street'Department and two pieces of fire appe~atus,
<br />one of the latter having been purchased late in. 1927. The cost of operation of the sweeper
<br />alone to, date would amount to at least one half of the additional amount requested.

<br /> Taking into consideration the added service and deducting ottr rebate from the State,
<br />which had gone into the General Fund of the City, I believe our report is at least favorable
<br />in comparison with last year."

<br /> On motion of Mr. Stewart, the communication was ordered to lay on the table until
<br /> the next regular meeting cf Council.

<br /> At thio point, Mr. Cast moved that the action jus~ taken on the requested aporopriation
<br /> for repairs~to fire engine houses be reconsidered. The motion was adopted.
<br /> Mr. 0asr moved that a special aPpropriation of $925.00 be allowed for repairs to the
<br /> Chambers Fire engine house, due to ~amage byfire.
<br /> The motion was adopted, and by the following vct~:

<br /> Mr. Oast moved that a Npecial appropriation of $575.00 be allowed for reoairs to Park

<br /> The City Attorney presented, the following ordinance:

<br /> On motion of Mr. Maupin, the ordinance was placed on first reading.

<br /> An announcement was read of the Twenty-third Annual Convention. of the League of Virginia
<br />Municipalities to be held in Newport News on the l?th and 18th cf October.
<br /> ~r. Stewart moved that the City Manager, City Clerk, and any Councilman who can attend,
<br />be n~med as delegates to attend said Convention.
<br /> The motion was adopted.

<br /> A resolution adopted by the Council of the City of Suffolk, Virginia, endorsing Hon.
<br />Junius E. West as:~a Candidate for Governor in 1929, was read.
<br /> On motion of Mr. Stewart, the resolution was laid on the table.

<br />The South Norfolk Bridge was opened on August 19th, 1928. The ferry traffic on the main line
<br />has not as yet ~opreciably felt the effect of the bridge competition. The Portsmouth-Berkley
<br />boat, however, has suffe=ed a loss in revenue of approximately $45.00 a day.
