September <br /> <br />I am attaching hereto a 0omparative Statement of Eevenue from August 19th, 1928, to September <br />9th, 1928, compared with the same dates in.1927. It wilt be noted from this statement that <br />~here has been an increase of $297.95 in vehicular traffic on the main line for this period, <br />~nile there has been a decrease in the m~in line passenger traffic and the Berkley traffic, <br />which ~nounts to a total decrease of $2,372.46 for the period. <br /> In view of mhe advertising of the South Norfolk Bridge it has been found necessary <br /> the Ferries. The advertising to date consists of the following: <br /> erected on Elm Avenue and Geo. Orump property, size <br />corner Elm Avenue and Oounty St. 32" x 16'. <br />Elm Avenue and Key Road- 32" x 16~. <br /> <br />O~Key'Road 150-f%. west Elm Avenue- 5 x 8'. <br /> <br />erected High Street and Rodman Avenue- 5 x 8~. <br /> <br />The advertising signs and road markers are of a standard color scheme, which we believe to be <br />very attractive and conspicmous. It is the intention, to place a number of road markers in the <br />Gity of No=folk and on the highways leading into Portsmouth.. MOst~of the road markers h~ve <br />been ~laoed on public property, and it will be necessary to ~ay for only three of the advertis- <br />ing s~gns. The total cost of the ~dvertising to date is $y5~.50. This, of course, does not <br />include the rental of the three above mentioned signs and the cos~ of illumination of two of <br />the signs. <br />N~INTENANGE The steams= "Virginia" wrecked, one of her paddle wheels, which was caused, in <br />all probabi~ity,~by striking some submerged object. It was necess~,ry to have same repaired <br />immediately and bids were received for renewing the entire wheel.' The Newport News Shipbuild- <br />ing & Dry Dock Gompany w~s the lowest bidder in the amount of $1,225.00,s~ud the boat w~s com- <br />pleted within the same week. The "Virginiaa ~lso had her bottom painted'~t this time. <br /> There was no ether m~intenance done during the month. <br /> ~ERRY SEHVIGE Ferry service du=ing the month has been satisfactory. Four boats have been <br /> operated during the entire day and fi~e boats during the rush periods in the moraine and evening <br /> when necessary. <br /> D~ing the ~ecent storm the ferries suffered no appreciable damage. Service was maintained, <br /> although the boats operated on ~ delayed schedule. <br /> PERSONNEL One new pilot was employe~ to take care of ~a~tions and sick leave. Faison, our <br /> negro co~l stevedo=e, died while on duty. His place ~as not bee~ fil~ed as yet. <br /> A steamfitter has been employed to overh~al the steam pipes in the Norfolk Terminal. <br /> I~am attaching hereto Copy of the audit for the month of August, 1928, as submitted <br /> by Frederick B. Hill & Gompany, Gertified Public Accountants. <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />NORFOLK COUNTY FERRIES, <br /> <br /> Chas. U.
