On motion of ~r. Hutchins, the recommendation was concurred in and the relief
ordered to be made.
2nd - tAt your meeting held on November l~th, you referred .to me a co~munio~-
tion from the City Collector reeuesting that certain rea! e state and personal property taxes,
shown upon several lists attachgd to her letter, be relieved.
I have ex~mined very carefully the particular list of real estate here-
with returned with my letter and resommend that the taxes charged thereon be relieved, ex~
w._~cn have been left on the list are erroneous,
copt such as I have crossed out. The ts.xes h~ ~
for several reasons. In some cases, there is no such property owned by the parties agaLust
whom it was assessed, and in other cases, it was doubly assessed, the errors occurring most-.
ly at the time of the t_anszer of the property and continued to be carried in the name of
the former owner.. Certain other taxes were assessed against life tenants, who have since
died; and the taxes no longer constitute a lien against the property. As to the taxes which
I have stricken from the list, it was mostly church p~operty, which the c?s~ch should at
least pay part of the year for which the taxes were assessed. In some cases, the land was
left vacant fo~ several years before the property was used for church purposes. There ass
also several parcels which I have stricken from the list, including H~L. Alexander, Truxton
Home Company, Char. L. Wiley and others, which I have been unable, for lack~of time, to
investigate. As to these parcels and another list of real estate and the list of personal
t~es,'which were referred to me, I will report on at a later date.'
